Head Coach Heather Tarr
Opening Statement
"It's good to get the first one out of the way. We played a great team in USC Upstate and faced a great pitcher in Lexi Shubert. I was happy with our ability to score early off of her and do what we needed to do. We didn't get a couple of the big hits I thought we could have got. We played okay on defense. (Kasey) Stancheck threw well enough for us to win. I'm happy for our team."
On Kasey Stancheck's performance:
"She's waited all year for an opportunity to be able to carry us and really play her best when it matters. I'm happy for her. We will obviously review the video and check her spots out and see what they look like. She definitely gave us the biggest chance to win today and that's what we ask our pitchers to do."
On her pitcher's performance setting the tone for post season:
"We've had our struggles throughout the year and this team is ready to play it's best which is to just play Husky softball. We want to play our best in the post season. It was good to have that happen but it doesn't happen without great pitching. The credit goes to Kasey and Kim Souza for throwing a great game."
#19 Kasey Stanchek, Pitcher, Sr.
On her ability to go 4 2/3 innings without a hit:
"I just tried to keep them off balance and move the ball around the zone. I just wanted to hit good spots at the right times."
On wanting the ball today:
"We all want the ball at all times so it was good to get the ball for the first game of postseason. It feels good."
#11 Kylee Lahners, OF, Sr.
On her offense and hitting a good pitcher:
"Coming into this game we had a mindset of knowing we were going to have to make adjustments. It's a little bit different type of pitcher than we've been facing over the conference, so we just knew going into it we were going to have to make adjustments throughout the game. Throughout the game we were just talking to each other and letting each other know what we saw and just continued to make adjustments."
USC Upstate
Head Coach Chris Hawkins
Opening Statement
"Well I thought we would hit a little better than we did. We are a good hitting team that had two hits. We've got to go back offensively and revamp what we are doing, change our focus a little bit and work a little harder on doing the things that we've done all year. Lexi (Shubert) gave up four runs against a very good team. That's very doable for us and we should have made a better effort offensively. We've got some games left to play and I feel good about us playing as many as we possibly can to hopefully get back and have a shot at winning it still."
On pressing hits early at the plate:
"We didn't make an adjustment. If you hit the bottom of the ball every time at bat, you've made no adjustments. Good teams will maybe next time at bat hit the top of the ball. At least you can see the adjustments being made. Some of our three at bats were underneath the ball. We as a team, we all lost a game but we will have a better focus and understanding of what we are trying to accomplish more so than being the one that hits the homerun to win it, being the team that gets above the ball and puts a lot of hits together to win a game."
On setting the tone with scratching out a run without a hit:
"I felt like we had a pitcher that could hold them below five. I felt in seven innings we could at least get five or six. Always have all year whether it was Georgia, North Carolina State or North Carolina. We can hit. Maybe we got our bad time out of the way and we can settle down and attack. I've got a lot of seniors realizing that if they lose again it's over. Hopefully that doesn't put pressure on them, but it makes them understand the importance of concentrating on the task at hand instead of in the zone."
#24 Karla Beasley, DP, Fr.
On pressing at the plate:
"I know we love to play and we had a certain focus. We just didn't achieve that focus. Lexi pitched a great game and hopefully the next games that come will change our focus and we will get some more hits.
On the frustration from the dugout:
"I know that we are usually better than this. We are usually achieving our goal. It can get a little frustrating but we still press all the way to the last out. We wanted it and we never give up."
#44 Lexi Shubert, P, So.
On Washington's offense being good from top to bottom:
"There wasn't really a batter that you could let up on. Everybody they've got is good. You have to go at them with the same mentality and be sure that you are focused the whole time because they are a good hitting team. They've got power and they've got speed."
On her overall performance:
"It could have been a little better. I had a good defense behind me that were making plays. I know I always have them back there even when I make a mistake I know they got me."
