GAME 1
Alabama allowed a season-high 17 hits and gave up double-digit runs for just the second time all season, as the Crimson Tide fell 10-2 in game one of the doubleheader.
Mississippi starter Christian Trent shut down the Crimson Tide, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. Alabama starter Taylor Guilbeau tossed 3.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on nine hits, but exited the game with the Crimson Tide still close.
Ole Miss jumped out front early, scoring two in the first on the power of four singles and a hit-by-pitch. Alabama would answer with one run of its own in the second, as Kyle Overstreet knocked his second homer in as many weekends to narrow the gap at 2-1.
The Rebels countered with one in the third and then added a trio of runs in the fourth on a three-run homer to left-center field to take a 6-1 lead into the fifth. The Crimson Tide got the leadoff runners on with a walk and a single and used an Ole Miss fielding error to score one on a Chandler Avant chopper that set the score at 6-2 through Alabama's half of the fifth.
Alabama was unable to score any more, but the Rebels added two apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to build their 10-2 lead.
GAME 2
The two teams squared off in a pitcher's duel in Saturday's second game with Ole Miss claiming the 4-0 game and series victory.
"Tonight was a really good pitching matchup; Walters and Bramlett went toe-to-toe," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "I was really pleased with Walters, his performance and how he gave us every opportunity to win that game. It was a well-played game on both sides, where pitching really dominated the night."
Alabama starter Jake Walters tossed 7.0 innings of one-run baseball, striking out six in the process. The freshman scattered six hits and retired nine straight at one point in the night. Ole Miss starter Brady Bramlett countered with 7.1 shutout frames, including nine punchouts.
The game was 1-0 in Ole Miss' favor heading to the bottom of the eighth, but two Rebel home runs provided a 4-0 cushion. The Ole Miss offense knocked a two-run home run and then two batters later a solo shot for a three-run eighth.
Alabama and Ole Miss will wrap up the series tomorrow with a Noon CT start on ESPN. The Crimson Tide will call on sophomore Geoffrey Bramblett while the Rebels will counter with freshman right-hander Will Stokes.
