JUNIOR (2016)
Named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List as part of the 60-candidate list released on April 20. Maryland (2/19): Made his first start in the Friday role, working 5.1 innings against the Terrapins on opening night ... allowed only one run on three hits while walking four and striking out six ... the six punchouts marked the 11th time in 20 career starts that the right-hander has recorded at least five strikeouts. North Dakota (2/26): Tossed 8.0 innings of one-run baseball, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out six ... exited with the game knotted up at 1-1 in the ninth before the Tide walked it off in the bottom half of the frame. Notre Dame (3/4): Earned his first win of the season, working 8.0 scoreless frames against the Fighting Irish ... allowed five hits and did not issue a walk while striking out six across his 108 pitches ... did not allow an extra-base hit all evening. Houston (3/11): Worked 4.1 innings of one-run baseball ... allowed four hits and issued four walks to go with his four punchouts ... the 4.1 IP is his shortest outing since March 1, 2015, against Louisiana-Lafayette when he worked 4.0 innings in the loss. LSU (3/19): Collected his second win of the season, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to an SEC-leading 0.85 ... allowed four hits and one walk while striking out one batter ... exited with a 4-0 lead as the Tide eventually shut out the Tigers, 6-0 ... the shutout effort was Alabama's first in Baton Rouge since May 14, 2000. Tennessee (3/25): Earned his team-leading third win of the season, working 6.1 innings of three-run baseball ... allowed a season-high eight hits, but did not walk a man and struck out six across his 100 pitches ... gave up all three runs in the first inning before settling down over the next 5.1 ... limited the Vols to five hits over the final 5.1 after allowing three in the firsts inning alone. Georgia (4/1): Did not factor into the decision after working a season-low 4.0-plus innings and exiting early with the tying runs on base … allowed four runs on six hits with one walk … also struck out a season-high seven batters … Alabama would rally for the 10-7, 13-inning win in the series opener. Kentucky (4/8): Suffered his first loss of the season despite throwing 7.0 innings and striking out a season-high nine batters ... allowed three runs on five hits with a walk ... retired 11 straight from the second inning through the fifth ... a single in the sixth broke his streak ... was his fifth quality start of the season and third against SEC competition. Ole Miss (4/15): Took the hard-luck loss against the Rebels ... worked 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run ... walked three and struck out eight ... has allowed one or no runs in six of his nine starts following the outing against the Rebels. Texas A&M (4/22): Did not factor into the decision after working 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts ... tossed 106 pitches before exiting with the game tied at 3-3 ... allowed all three runs in the first inning but settled down over the final frames, stranding six to keep the Aggies off the board ... was his seventh quality start of the season, five of which have come in SEC play. Mississippi State (4/28): Suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts … gave up five runs in the third, but rebounded to retire nine of the next 10 batters before exiting the game … the five earned runs were his most allowed since April 18, 2015, when he allowed five at Missouri … his six runs allowed were the most the junior has given up since his sophomore campaign against Louisiana-Lafayette on March 1, 2015.
