TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Alabama women's golf team will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the SEC Championship, which starts Friday at the par-72, 6,308-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club's Legacy Course.
"This is the closest we get to Tuscaloosa by far, and one of the biggest tournaments of the year," head coach Mic Potter said. "It's a good opportunity [for fans] to see some of the best women's golf teams in the nation, so we'd encourage everyone to come out."
For the third consecutive year, the SEC Championship will be hosted at the Greystone Golf and Country Club, but for the first time will be played on the Legacy Course. Since the championship has moved to Birmingham, the Crimson Tide has won the title (2013) and finished fourth (2014).Â
Alabama has captured the SEC title twice, first in 2010. In 2013, the Crimson Tide swept medalist honors, with the team running away with the championship by 14 strokes over second place Georgia. Stephanie Meadow won the individual crown with an even-par 216, nine shots better than the next competitor.
Two current student-athletes return from the Alabama team that finished fourth at last year's SEC Championship. Emma Talley, who finished 13th, and Janie Jackson, who tied for fifth.
This weekend, Talley, a junior who leads the team with a 73.05 scoring average, will play from the No. 1 position. Joining her on the Legacy course will be junior Janie Jackson, sophomores Cammie Gray and Mia Landegren, and freshman Lakareber Abe.
Coming off her best collegiate 18- and 54-hole performances last weekend, Cammie Gray looks to continue her stellar play.
"She's becoming a much more consistent golfer, and her ball-striking is much more consistent," Potter said. "She hits greens, and is becoming a better putter."
The Southeastern Conference is well-represented in the April 13 edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, with eight of the 14 teams ranked in the top-25, including four in the top-10 (No. 5 South Carolina, No. 6 LSU, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 Mississippi State, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 16 Texas A&M, No. 18 Vanderbilt and No. 21 Florida).
For the first time in Southeastern Conference history, a championship wrap-up show will be broadcast on tape delay on the SEC Network, Wednesday, April 29, at 9:30 p.m. CDT.
The SEC Championship will get underway with a shotgun start on Friday at 9 a.m. CDT.
