The Battle Plan - March 6, 2015

Providing Vital Guidance on Career Development
Last summer we established the Gaylon and Susan McCollough A-Club Career Development and Leadership Center under the leadership of Ms. Jessie Gardner. Its mission is to actively support professional and leadership growth of current and former Crimson Tide student-athletes through practical education and comprehensive programming in preparation for success in life.
Contributions from Gaylon and Susan McCollough and the A-Club have helped us launch this program that we believe will add significantly to that phase of our overall Athletic Department Mission: "To educate and prepare our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in life after graduation." Jessie is doing an outstanding job, and has initiated the Crimson Tide D.R.I.V.E. for Success Program.
Goals of the Crimson Tide D.R.I.V.E. for Success Program
- Dedication - Cultivate a sense of DEDICATION for personal enhancement;
- Responsibility - Educate and inspire RESPONSIBLE choices;
- Influence - Develop and provide opportunities for INFLUENCE through leadership growth;
- Vision - Assist in identifying VISION for future personal and professional success;
- Excellence - Instill an attitude of EXCELLENCE in all aspects of life
I attended a Student-Athlete Networking Night workshop on Wednesday night with many of our student-athletes in the junior class to learn about the value of networking. Members of our A-Club Alumni Association and our First and Ten Club, representing a variety of jobs and industries, served as discussion leaders. I was very impressed with the eagerness to learn exhibited by our student-athletes and the willingness to teach exhibited by our A-Club and First and Ten members.
We have created something very special in this initiative and I look forward to seeing it grow in the coming years.
3 Teams Earn Scholastic Recognition Nationally
Three of our athletics teams - the men's and women's cross country teams and the women's swimming & diving team - were recently recognized among the best nationally in balancing academic and competitive excellence for the 2014 fall semester.
Coach Dennis Pursley's women's swimming and diving team earned the Team Scholar All American award from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. It is awarded to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Coach Dan Waters' cross country teams earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Scholar Team honors for the 2014 cross country season by posting a cumulative team GPA or at least 3.0. The Crimson Tide women have a cumulative team GPA of 3.64, while the men's team has a cumulative team GPA of 3.22 to earn team All-Academic honors.
Two members of the women's track & field/cross country team, junior Katelyn Greenleaf and sophomore Hannah Waggoner, earned individual All-Academic honors for the 2014 cross country season from the USTFCCCA. Individual honorees must have compiled a cumulative GPA or 3.25 or greater and must have finished as an All-American or among the 15 finishers (or 10 percent) in their regional meet. Katelyn has a 3.88 grade-point average in Nutrition. Hannah has a 3.69 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Both Katelyn and Hannah finished among the top 15 runners at the NCAA South Region meet back in November, clinching the honor.
We are extremely proud of these student-athletes, who are excelling in competition and in the classroom. It is a challenging time in their lives and they are truly rising to the occasion.
A Fond Farewell to Todd Bramble
Earlier today, Todd Bramble, who spent seven seasons as head coach of our women's soccer team, resigned his post to accept the head coaching position at George Mason University. While I am sad to see Todd leave us, I wish him the very best in this new challenge.
I appreciate the commitment that Todd made to our program, the level to which he took our team over his years here, and the excellent young ladies he recruited to represent our school and our state. Those young people will be Todd's legacy, something that truly transcends the on-field record and the final tally on the scoreboard.
This will be another opportunity for us to help our soccer program reach the level of success that we desire, and a chance for us to build on the foundation that Todd built. We are beginning our search for a new coach immediately. I have appointed Jerrod Roh, our assistant coach, to interim head coach.
As with all of our programs, our goal is to build championship teams that are competitive on the field, excel in the classroom, and prepare student-athletes to be successful in life after graduation. I have assured our current student-athletes, those who have signed to play at Alabama, and recruits that have committed to sign here - that our expectations for Alabama soccer remain high.
Sports Updates
At this writing, seven of our teams are nationally ranked among the top 25 in their respective sports, including two ranked in the top 10, and five are currently ranked in the top 20 nationally. Here's a glance at some recent news regarding our teams that are currently in action.
Baseball
Overall Record: 7-5
Recent Results: Feb. 27 vs. Louisiana (W, 6-4); Feb. 28 vs. Louisiana (L, 5-6); Feb. 28 vs. Louisiana (L, 2-14); March 3 vs. Auburn (L, 3-5).
Current National Ranking: 28th (NCBWA, March 2)
Up Next: March 6-8 vs. Lipscomb; March 10 vs. Alabama A&M (DH); March 13-15 at Mississippi State
The baseball team heads to Mobile this weekend, continuing its barnstorming across the state. The Tide spent Tuesday in Montgomery against Auburn and has already spent two weekends in Hoover, our home site for 2015. This weekend will be a homecoming for the one player from Mobile on our current roster, right fielder Casey Hughston, who just happens to be on quite a tear so far this season. Casey is leading the team in seven offensive categories including (batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging and on-base percentage). Mikey White is on a seven-game hitting streak during which he is hitting .423 with four doubles, three triples, one home run, eight RBI, 12 runs scored, one walk, has reached base three times via a hit-by-pitch and has a stolen base. We'll play Lipscomb in the series this weekend in Mobile, then host a doubleheader against Alabama A&M on Tuesday in Hoover before heading to Starkville to kick off SEC play against Mississippi State next weekend. Our three-game series with Lipscomb in Mobile will take place at Hank Aaron Stadium. Start times are 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday before a 2 p.m. series closer on Sunday afternoon.
Men's Basketball
Overall Record: 17-13
SEC Record: 7-10
Recent Results: Feb. 28 at Vanderbilt (L, 66-73); March 3 vs. Ole Miss (L, 74-82) Up Next: at Texas A&M (Saturday, March 7); March 11-15 at SEC Tournament (Nashville, Tenn.)
The Crimson Tide will close the 2014-15 regular season tomorrow at Texas A&M. Last week, we held leads at halftime against both Vanderbilt and Ole Miss, but couldn't hold it down the stretch. Our roster has become depleted due to a spate of injuries, a reality that almost certainly was a contributing factor in those losses. Injuries have been a major factor this season as we are currently without two of our top four scorers for the remainder of the season. Ricky Tarrant (13.1 ppg - ruptured plantar fascia in left foot) and Shannon Hale (8.4 ppg - broken left foot) were vital parts of our team, and their absence removes two players who combined to score 21.5 points per game. This season, our players have missed a total of 19.5 games due to injuries (Ricky Tarrant, 11; Retin Obasohan, 3; Hale, 2.5; Michael Kessens, 2; Rodney Cooper, 1). I can't say enough good things about our senior guard, Levi Randolph, who had one of the best games of his career on Senior Night against Ole Miss, scoring 32 points (one shy of matching his career high of 33 vs. Missouri last season). In the Ole Miss game, Levi set a school record by hitting 17-of-17 free throws, the most free throws made in a game without a miss. The 17 made free throws were the second-most made in a game in Alabama history, and the last time an Alabama player made 17 or more free throws in a game was Feb, 7, 1972, when Paul Ellis hit 18 against Ole Miss. Levi joined Rodney Cooper and Dakota Slaughter as players making their final Coleman Coliseum regular season appearance on Senior Night. That trio combined for 54 of our 74 points.
Women's Basketball
Overall Record: 13-19
SEC Record: 2-14
Recent Results: March 1 at Auburn (L, 73-80); March 4 vs. Vanderbilt (SEC Tournament) (L, 56-66)
After our loss to Vanderbilt on Thursday, head coach Kristy Curry said, "There are so many moments that we've had this year during the game where we just don't sense how difficult it is or how hard we have to play, and I think as we continue to teach and build we have got to understand that. I thought tonight that hurt us in critical moments when we were tied, or needed an easy finish inside, or couldn't come back down and get a stop or just put back-to-back-to-back quality possessions together. We will grow. We will learn. We are building. The future is incredibly bright." I could not more emphatically agree with her assessment! The future is extremely bright, indeed, as we return the majority of our scoring and rebounding, including our leader in both categories in Ashley Williams (13.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game) as well as welcome a recruiting class that ranked in the nation's top 25. We have made significant progress the last two seasons while playing in the nation's toughest conference, top to bottom.
Men's Golf
Recent Results: Feb. 28-March 1 at John Hayt Invitational (5th Place)
Up Next: Monday-Wednesday, March 9-11, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev.
Current National Ranking: 16th (Golfweek, March 4)
Junior Tom Lovelady finished fourth overall to pace the men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the John Hayt Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. The Crimson Tide finished with a score of 29-over par 893 (300-301-291) on the Sawgrass Country Club course. Tom's fourth-place finish was his second-best finish this season and the third-best result of his Alabama career. He finished the tournament with a score of 3-over 219 (70-75-74), which included a season-low 2-under 70 in the opening round of play. Sophomores Robby Shelton (tied for 10th) and Dru Love (tied for 15th) also had solid tournaments, both finishing among the top 15. Robby had his 14th career top-10 finish in 18 college tournaments at 5-over 221 (73-76-72). Dru, coming off his first career tournament win at the Puerto Rico Classic one week earlier, finished with a 222 (73-76-73).
Women's Golf
Recent Results: Feb. 8-10 at Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (8th Place)
Up Next: March 6-8 at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Current National Ranking: 22nd (Golfweek, March 4)
The women's golf team returns to action this weekend at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on the Pete Dye Course at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Alabama has played in all four editions of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, winning in 2012 and 2013, while finishing ninth last spring. This week head coach Mic Potter will start the combination of Emma Talley, Janie Jackson, Lakareber Abe, Cammie Gray and Mia Landegren for the first time this season against one of the most competitive fields in women's golf. The competition includes 12 teams currently ranked in the top 20 nationally.
Gymnastics
Overall Record: 6-2-0
SEC Record: 4-2-0
Recent Results: Feb. 27 vs. LSU (L, 197.225 to 197.350)
Up Next: March 6, at Missouri; March 8, vs. Auburn (at Birmingham)
Current National Ranking: 6th (GymInfo.com, March 2)
Last Friday, the Crimson Tide lost a close one to No. 2 LSU, snapping a six-year home win streak that spanned 49 contests. Prior to the setback, our last loss in Coleman Coliseum was on Feb. 13, 2009, also against LSU. All six of our wins this season have come against opponents ranked in the top 24 nationally with four coming against top-12 opponents, including then No. 1 Florida. Both of our losses have come against teams ranked in the top 12 nationally. Our team has scored 197-plus points in five of its last six meets, including the last four in a row. In short, this team faces top competition every time out and consistently performs at a high level, win or lose. Of 192 routines performed this season so far, our gymnasts have scored a 9.85 or better in 124, that's 65 percent of the time. This weekend our team will pack two meets into one weekend for the first time this season. On Friday, the Tide competes at No. 24 Missouri. Then, on Sunday, Alabama will take on No. 9 Auburn at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center. The Auburn meet, Elevate the Stage, is aligned with two philanthropic partners, Camp Smile-A-Mile and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama, both of which will benefit from proceeds of the event. It promises to be a great afternoon of action and it's for a great cause. Head out to the BJCC for some good Sunday afternoon entertainment.
Softball
Overall Record: 15-4
Recent Results: Feb. 28-March 1 vs. Louisiana (W, 5-1; L, 1-2; W, 3-2)
Up Next: March 6-8 vs. Ole Miss; March 10 vs. UAB
Current National Ranking: 4th (USA Today/NFCA Coaches, March 3) and 5th (ESPN.com/USA Softball, March 3)
Coach Patrick Murphy's team earned two big wins over fifth-ranked Louisiana last weekend concluding a very tough preseason that included five games against opponents ranked in the top five nationally. In all of last season, including the NCAA Tournament, our team played only six games against opponents ranked in the top five, so we've nearly matched last year's total and we haven't even started SEC play yet. Even though the SEC is the nation's toughest conference, Coach Murphy still wanted to challenge this team early with an eye toward being prepared to play the crucial games, particularly in the latter stages of the season. Coach Murphy always says that three things are the key to a successful team: 1) good pitching; 2) good defense; and 3) timely hitting. Last weekend, the Crimson Tide showed those traits against one of the nation's best teams. Louisiana had outscored its opponents 121-7 prior to last weekend. The Tide pitching staff limited them to just five runs in three games. The Alabama defense didn't commit a single error all weekend. And, our offense looked good in game one (our first multi-home run game of the year) but struggled to get the timely hit in game two in a losing effort. The timely hitting came around in game three to key a victory. Haylie McCleney was the final at-bat in both Saturday's loss (she grounded out with the game-winning run in scoring position) and Sunday's win (her walk-off sacrifice fly scored the winning run). We like our chances with Haylie at the plate in a clutch situation. The two wins last weekend put Coach Murphy closer to his 900th career win, as he owns 885 victories headed into this weekend's action. A staggering 857 of those wins have come at Alabama, as he has been a model of consistency over his 16-plus years as head coach. The Crimson Tide has made it to the NCAA Tournament every year since he took over as head coach in 1999, and he has coached 45 All-Americans and 18 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
Swimming & Diving
Recent Results: Feb. 17-21 at SEC Championships (Men - 5th; Women - 9th)
Up Next: March 9-11 at NCAA Zone B Diving Championships; March 19-21 at Women's NCAA Championships; March 26-28 at Men's NCAA Championships
Current National Ranking: Men - 23rd (CSCAA Coaches, Feb. 23)
Four of our women's swimmers have been officially invited to compete at the upcoming NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, led by two-time SEC breaststroke champion Kaylin Burchell, who will be making her fourth NCAA appearance. Junior Emma Saunders, sophomore Bridget Blood and freshman Mia Nonnenberg have also earned a place in the meet. Alabama will add four relay swimmers to its travel party while our divers will look to earn a place at the national championships during the upcoming Zone B Championships. Kaylin, who won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at last month's SEC Championships, is seeded second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke. Last weekend, our swimmers broke a pair of school records and posted several times that stand among the team's all-time top-10 lists at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga. Mia Nonnenberg broke the 400 individual medley mark by a quarter of a second, and junior Emma Saunders bettered her own school record in the 200 backstroke, taking nearly a quarter of a second off of that mark.
Men's Tennis
Overall Record: 8-9
SEC Record: 0-2
Recent Results: Feb. 27 vs. Mississippi State (L, 0-4); March 1 vs. Jackson State (W, 4-0) and Jacksonville State (W, 5-0; 4-0); March 5 at Arkansas (L, 3-4)
Up Next: March 7 vs. Ole Miss and Alabama State; March 13 at Auburn
Coach George Husack's team is young and talented - and currently taking their lumps. But that's only temporary. The Tide began the SEC portion of the schedule on Feb. 27, opening with Mississippi State where the Tide fell, 4-0. That score was deceiving because each match was extremely close, with doubles going down to the wire as each of the three matches was decided by two games and five of the 10 singles sets that finished were decided in a tiebreaker. Our second SEC match at Arkansas was another close one where Alabama was edged, 4-3. The Tide trailed 3-0 after losing doubles and the first two singles matches, but came back to tie it at 3-3. The match was decided in a third-set tiebreaker. This is another one of our rebuilding teams that is close to making a breakthrough.
Women's Tennis
Overall Record: 9-2
SEC Record: 1-1
Recent Results: Feb. 27 at No. 3 Florida (L, 1-4); March 1 at South Carolina (W, 4-2)
Up Next: March 6 vs. No. 6 Georgia; March 8 vs. Tennessee
Current National Ranking: 9th (ITA)
The women's tennis team is in the midst of the SEC season, which started last weekend with a loss to No. 3 Florida on Friday, before a bounce-back win over South Carolina on Sunday. The Tide showed its resilience in the win over the Gamecocks after the loss to the Gators. Alabama lost the doubles point against the Gamecocks, the first time all season that has happened, but the team responded with a gutsy effort in singles to take a 4-2 victory in a match that lasted approximately six hours. Our defending national champion doubles team of sophomores Erin Routliffe & junior Maya Jansen continue to play at a high level as they are off to a perfect 10-0 start to the season. They are currently ranked as the No. 9 doubles pairing in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). At this writing, half of our singles lineup is ranked nationally by the ITA: Routliffe (35), Jansen (56) and sophomore Danielle Spielmann (64). Junior Natalia Maynetto (5-1) & senior Luice Perez (7-1) deserve recognition as well. They have defended the backcourts for the Tide all season, going a combined 12-2 so far. Natalia clinched the match against South Carolina with the only straight-sets victory in the match (6-1, 7-5).
Track & Field
Recent Results: February 27-28, SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky. (Men: 8th, Women: 6th)
Up Next: March 13-14 at NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Current National Ranking(s): Men - 11th (USTFCCCA), Women - 27th (USTFCCCA)
Congratulations to our senior sprinter from Jamaica, Remona Burchell, who further etched her name into Alabama annals as one of the most accomplished athletes in our history last weekend at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The 2014 NCAA champion in the indoor 60-meter dash and the outdoor 100-meter dash, Remona earned her first SEC title last Saturday by breaking the collegiate record in the women's 60-meter dash at Kentucky as she broke the tape in a time of 7.08 seconds. She has now run two of the five fastest 60-meter times in collegiate history this season, and three of the eight fastest overall. That performance also is the second-fastest in the entire world so far this season, so it came as no surprise on Monday when it was learned that she was named co-National Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division I by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). As in all Olympic sports, the SEC is the nation's best and toughest conference. Scoring team points - and winning team championships - at SEC meets in sports like track and field and swimming & diving is a monumental task. So, placing eighth in the men's team standings and sixth in the women's race, tends to be a bit of a misleading fact. Don't be surprised to see Alabama among the top 10 or top 20 at the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend. Remona's heroics highlighted a weekend in which we had many personal-best performances and some strong overall showings in what many feel is the toughest indoor team scoring meet in the world. Eleven of our athletes (nine men and two women) have been accepted for entry into the NCAA Indoor meet. They will compete in nine events with Remona leading the way in the women's 60-meter dash. Junior Cameron Hudson will be competing in three events - the men's 60-meter dash, long jump and 4x400-meter relay - and three other Alabama men are entered to compete in two events: Alex Amankwah (men's 800 and 4x400 relay), Steven Gayle (men's 4x400 relay and distance medley relay) and Jacopo Lahbi (men's 800 and 4x400 relay). Joining them will be Matt Airola in the men's distance medley relay (DMR), Robbie Farnham-Rose (men's DMR), Justin Fondren (men's high jump), Jeremiah Green (men's long jump), Marlon Humphrey (men's 4x400 relay) and Lakan Taylor in the women's pole vault.
