Charlottesville, Va. - The Alabama women's tennis team defeated the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils by a final score of 4-1 in Sunday morning's consolation match at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. The Duke Blue Devils were the ITA National Indoors defending champions. Alabama has now reeled off back-to-back victories after defeating Oklahoma State by a final score of 4-0 in the first consolation match of the tournament on Saturday.
Emily Zabor and Danielle Spielmann earned a quick 6-1 victory on court 2 to begin doubles play, but Duke quickly answered with a 7-5 win on court 3. For the second consecutive day, the point would come down to Alabama's court 1 pairing of No. 18 Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen. After knotting the score at 6-6, Routliffe and Jansen secured the point for the Tide, topping Duke's Ester Goldfield and Alyssa Smith, 7-2, in the tiebreaker.
In singles play, Maya Jansen eared the Tide's second point of the day with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory on court 3. Not far behind for the Tide was Zabor, who pushed Alabama's lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court 4. The Blue Devils would put up a point of their own when Ester Goldfeld defeated Bama's Routliffe, 6-0, 7-6 on court 1, but Alabama clinched the match shortly thereafter as Luicelena Perez locked down a 7-5, 6-3 win on court 5.
This weekend's trip to the ITA National Indoors marked the 3rd appearance in as many years for the Crimson Tide. Alabama also clinched berths in the tournament with ITA Kick-Off Weekend victories in both 2013 and 2014, but have yet to advance past the first round of the National Indoor Championships.
Following this weekend's tournament, the Tide will have a weekend off before taking part in the annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, leading up to the start of SEC play on Feb. 27 at Florida.
