TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team defeated in-state competitor UAB, 2-0, in Friday night soccer action at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
"It's a win," said head coach Todd Bramble. "We'll never leave this field after winning the game, taking that for granted. Every win is tough to come by."
Emily Rusk made five saves against UAB's 10 shots en route to her second shutout of the season and the Tide's third clean sheet. Alabama placed seven of 12 shots on frame and broke through to score two goals by night's end.
The Tide scoring was attributed once again to seniors Theresa Diederich and Laura Lee Smith. Each veteran contributed one goal apiece, the team-leading fourth goal on the season for each as well.
"We're seeing Theresa and Laura Lee on the score sheet again," said Bramble. "It's two seniors that are having a good year for us. We're happy about the leadership they're giving us."
With the win, Alabama improves to 4-2-1 on the season, while UAB falls to 2-4.
Alabama opened the scoring at the 18:58 mark when Diederich converted a penalty kick in the lower left corner. The Tide nearly cashed in off a long free kick at the 17th minute, but the goal was revoked as UA was offside.
The Tide added its second and final goal in the 87th minute when Smith scored off a breakaway that she chipped over the head of the UAB goalkeeper, who was able to get a hand on the ball but could not prevent it from reaching the net. Merel Van Dongen aided the goal with her second assist of the season.
Alabama will take Sunday off as the team prepares for the kickoff of SEC play next week. The No. 8-ranked Florida Gators will come to Tuscaloosa on Friday, Sept. 19 for a 7 p.m. match. The Tide will then square off with Alabama State on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
