After clinching a spot in the SEC Championship Game earlier Saturday due to Mississippi State's loss at Ole Miss, the Tide overcame a 630-yard offensive show by Auburn by mounting an impressive comeback from a 33-21 third-quarter deficit. With the win, Alabama holds a 43-35-1 lead in the series and has had the upper hand in recent meetings, claiming five of the last eight games in the series including three of the last four.
The explosive game marked the highest scoring game in series history. The previous high was a 75-point game in 1969 (Auburn 49, Alabama 26). Auburn set new records for Alabama opponents with 630 total yards and 90 offensive plays as the teams combined for an Iron Bowl-record 1,169 yards of total offense, setting a new Iron Bowl record for combined yardage (Auburn - 630, Alabama - 539). The previous record was 1,074 yards in 1969 (Auburn had 541, Alabama had 533).
Alabama owns a 16-game home winning streak. The Crimson Tide has not lost a game at home since falling to Texas A&M in 2012. With the win, Alabama reached the 11-win plateau for the 18th time in school history. Under head coach Nick Saban the Tide has had six 11-win seasons (2008-09, 2011-14).
Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon rushed for 127 yards and 2 scores on 19 carries while quarterback Blake Sims passed for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 20 of 27 pass attempts with 3 interceptions. For Auburn, wide receiver Sammie Coates caught 5 passes for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns; receiver Duke Williams had 7 receptions for 121 yards; and quarterback Nick Marshall passed for 456 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception while completing 27 of 43 attempts.
The Alabama defense was led in tackles by linebacker Trey DePriest with 14 while safety Nick Perry had 13 stops and cornerback Geno Smith made 10 tackles. Perry also had two tackles for loss, a key interception and broke up another pass. Smith made two tackles for loss. Linebacker Reggie Ragland had 3 tackles, including a crucial fumble recovery. The Tide defense ended the game with 2 quarterback sacks, 9 tackles for loss, 6 pass breakups and 8 quarterback hurries.
Punter JK Scott averaged 55.5 yards on his 2 punts in the game, including a 70-yarder and another that was downed inside the Auburn 20-yard line.
Auburn won the opening coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Alabama chose to defend the South end zone. The kickoff was pooch kicked by Adam Griffith, but went out of bounds untouched at the Auburn 39. On first down, Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall attempted a screen pass to running back Roc Thomas that fell incomplete, but the pass was ruled a lateral and was recovered by Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland at the Tiger 35 with 14:53 on the clock.
On first down Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon gained 4 yards on a run at right guard. On second down, Yeldon took a handoff at left guard for 16 yards to the Auburn 15. From there, Tide quarterback Blake Sims' first pass attempt of the game was complete on a short slant to receiver Amari Cooper for 5 yards to the Auburn 10. After fullback Jalston Fowler gained 2 yards on a run at right tackle on first down, Yeldon took a handoff around left end and followed blocking for 8 yards and a touchdown. Gunnar Raborn's extra-point kick was good and the Crimson Tide led, 7-0, with 12:47 left in the first quarter.
JK Scott kicked off for Alabama and his kick was downed in the end zone for a touchback. Auburn started the possession at its 25-yard line. A pass by Marshall to tailback Corey Grant lost a yard on first down. On second down, tailback Cameron Artis-Payne took a handoff up the middle and bulled for 13 yards to a first down at the Auburn 37. A rush on first down by Artis-Payne at left guard gained a yard but Alabama was assessed a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the play, moving the ball to the Tide 47 and a first down. A deep pass by Marshall for Duke Williams on first down was incomplete, then Marshall kept up the middle on a quarterback draw for 28 yards to a first down at the Tide 19. On first down, Artis-Payne gained 5 on a run at left end to the Tide 14. Artis-Payne carried at left guard on second down for 4 yards to the Tide 10, setting up third and 1. Artis-Payne rushed at right guard for 4 yards to a first down at the Tide 6. On the next play, Artis-Payne gained 2 yards at right tackle to the Tide 4. Auburn called its first time out of the half with 8:59 on the clock. On second down, Artis-Payne took a pitch sweep to the right side and gained 1 yard to the Tide 3, stopped by Ragland and Trey DePriest. On third and goal, Marshall rolled left and looked to pass to Williams in the back of the end zone but the pass was high and incomplete, forcing a 20-yard field goal attempt by Daniel Carlson. Carlson's kick was good and Auburn had narrowed the Alabama lead to 7-3 with 8:08 left in the first quarter.
Carlson's kickoff went out of bounds at the Tide 20. On first down, Sims threw a screen pass to Cooper at the right side and Cooper turned it into a 16-yard gain to the Tide 36. A 15-yard personal foul penalty for a face mask on Auburn added 15 yards to the play, putting the ball at the Auburn 49. On first down, Fowler carried for a yard at right end and another 15-yard face mask penalty on Auburn moved the ball to the Tiger 33. After a loss of 4 yards on a jet sweep run by receiver Christion Jones put the ball at the Auburn 37, Sims connected with tight end O.J. Howard for 20 yards and a first down at the Tiger 17. On the next play Sims made a perfect throw to Cooper on a deep post in the right corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Raborn's kick was good and Alabama led 14-3 with 6:17 left in the first quarter.
Scott kicked off for Alabama. The kickoff was downed in the end zone for a touchback and Auburn began from its own 25. On first down, Marshall kept around left end for 14 yards and a first down at the Auburn 39. After a run by Artis-Payne at left tackle gained 2 yards to the Auburn 41, Marshall and Williams connected for a 42-yard pass play to the Tide 17. Artis-Payne gained 6 yards at right tackle on first down, reaching the Tide 11. On second down, Artis-Payne gained 3 yards at right guard to the Tide 8. On third and 1 at the 8, Artis-Payne was stopped short of a first down up the middle by A'Shawn Robinson, forcing fourth and inches at the 8. Auburn called its second timeout of the first half with 3:30 left in the quarter to contemplate the fourth-down play call. When play resumed, Marshall took a quarterback sneak up the middle and gained just enough for the first down as the measurement after the play revealed a first down made by the nose of the football. On first and goal at the 7, Marshall passed for Williams at the left side of the end zone but it went incomplete. Marshall passed to the end zone for tight end C.J. Uzomah on second down and the pass was incomplete with coverage by Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson. On third and goal at the Tide 7, Marshall passed for receiver Sammie Coates, but the pass was too high and hard and fell incomplete. That forced a 24-yard field goal by Carlson that was accurate. Auburn had pulled within 14-6 with 2:57 on the clock.
Carlson's kickoff sailed out of the end zone for a touchback and the Alabama started the possession at the Tide 25. On first down, Derrick Henry took a handoff up the middle for a yard to the Tide 26. On second down, a pass from Sims to Cooper at the right side gained 7 yards to the Tide 33. Facing third and 2 at the 33, Alabama ran an option pitch to the right that was stuffed for a loss of 3 yards to the 30 and forcing a punt. Sims appeared to be slightly injured on the play and walked off with a slight limp as Scott entered to punt. Scott rocketed a 70-yard punt that landed at the Auburn 11 before rolling into the end zone for a touchback.
Auburn took possession with 1:12 left in the quarter, starting at its 20. On first down, a keeper by Marshall gained nothing up the middle on a hit by Ragland. On second down, Marshall's pass up the middle for Coates was off the mark and incomplete. The third and 10 play from the Auburn 20 was a rollout by Marshall that ended up as an 11-yard pass to Coates along the left sideline for a first down at the Auburn 31. Artis-Payne ran at right guard for 15 yards to the Auburn 46 and a first down. A run by Artis-Payne was stopped for a loss of 1 yard by Tide defensive back Geno Smith as the quarter ended.
Through one quarter, Auburn had the statistical edge with 141 yards to Alabama's 99. The Tigers had rushed for 89 yards to the Tide's 25 and the Tide had a 65-52 edge in passing yardage. Artis-Payne had 13 carries for 55 yards. Auburn had run 27 offensive plays to Alabama's 13, but the Tide had averaged 6.9 yards per play to Auburn's 5.2.
The second quarter began with the Tigers in a second and 11 situation at the Auburn 45. Marshall threw a pass to Williams across the middle for 19 yards and a first down at the Tide 36. Running back Corey Grant took a handoff at right guard for 12 yards to the Tide 24. On first down, Marshall passed to wide receiver Marcus Davis for 7 yards to the Tide 17. On second and 3, a false start penalty on Auburn moved the ball back 5 yards to the Tide 22 and created second and 8. Marshall kept on second down at right end and went out of bounds for no gain. On third and 8 at the 22, Marshall hit Williams on a slant pattern for 9 yards and a first down at the Tide 13. On first down, a running play was negated by an illegal formation penalty on Auburn. That moved the ball back 5 yards to the Tide 18 and a first and 15. A handoff to Grant on first down gained 4 yards to the Tide 14. On second and 11 at the Tide 14, Artis-Payne took a handoff around right end for 9 yards to the Tide 5. On third and 2 at the 5, Tide linebacker Ryan Anderson dropped Artis-Payne for a loss of 2 yards at the Tide 7. That set up fourth and 4 at the Tide 7. Carlson entered to attempt a 24-yard field goal. Carlson's third field goal of the game was good and the Tigers trailed the Tide, 14-9, with 11:01 left in the second quarter.
Christion Jones returned Carlson's kickoff from the Alabama goal line for 21 yards. Alabama set up at its own 21. On the first play, a pass by Sims for Cooper was intercepted by Auburn defensive back Jermaine Whitehead at the Tide 37 and returned 5 yards to set up the Tigers at the Alabama 32. After a loss of 2 yards by Marshall on first down, Marshall passed to Coates for a 34-yard touchdown with 10:16 left in the half. Coates broke free behind Alabama's Eddie Jackson on the play and caught the ball in the end zone along the right sideline. Carlson's kick was good and the Tigers led, 16-14.
Carlson's kickoff went out of the end zone for a touchback. Alabama began at its 25. On first down, a run up the middle by Yeldon gained 6 yards to the Tide 31. Another run up the middle by Yeldon on second down gained 13 yards and a first down at the Tide 44. Yeldon carried again on the next play, running at right tackle before tip-toeing through tacklers for a gain of 7 to the Auburn 49. A pass to White was incomplete on second down. On third and 3 at the Tiger 49, Sims was sacked for a loss of 7 by Auburn linebacker Anthony Swain at the Tide 44. Scott entered to punt and his wobbly 41-yard punt landed at the Auburn 30 before rolling to the Tiger 15 where return man Quan Bray committed an illegal fair catch penalty by running with it after signaling for a fair catch. The penalty was a 5-yarder back to the Tiger 10-yard line.
Auburn began at its 10 with 8:14 left in the half. A run by Grant on first down gained 13 yards at right end to the Tiger 23. A pass from Marshall to Ricardo Louis gained 5 yards to the Tiger 28. On second down, a center snap bounced off Marcus Davis and Davis picked it up for a 2-yard loss at the 26. A pass from Marshall to Bray gained 21 yards to the Tide 49 and a first down. A run up the middle by Artis-Payne lost 2 yards to the Auburn 49. On third and 12 from the 49, a deep pass by a scrambling Marshall fell incomplete at the Alabama 10 to force a punt. Carlson's 38-yard punt was fielded by Christion Jones at the Tide 13 and he followed a running lane set up by blocking to a 29-yard return to the Tide 42.
Alabama took the ball at its 42 with 4:42 left in the first half. A screen pass from Sims to Fowler gained 15 yards and a first down at the Auburn 43. Yeldon took a screen pass to the left from Sims and gained 13 yards and a first down at the Auburn 30. Sims scrambled under pressure on the next play and found a wide-open Christion Jones at the left sideline for 21 yards and a first down at the Auburn 9. Timeout was called by the officials to review the Jones catch with 3:02 on the clock. The call was confirmed and play resumed. On first down, Yeldon took a handoff at right end for 4 yards to the Tiger 5. A pass for Cooper at the goal line was broken up by Whitehead to force third and goal at the 5. A pass to Cooper at the right side gained 4 yards to the 1 where he was stopped by Auburn safety Johnathan Ford. On fourth and goal inside the Auburn 1, Yeldon took a handoff up the middle and scored a touchdown. Raborn's kick was good and Alabama had a 21-16 lead with 1:23 left in the second period.
Scott's kickoff was downed by Bray 5 yards deep in the end zone for a touchback. Auburn began at its 25 with 1:23 on the clock and owning 1 timeout. Marshall took a quarterback draw up the middle on first down for 7 yards to the Auburn 32. On second and 3, Marshall threw to Coates on a streak pattern and Coates beat Jackson for a 68-yard touchdown play. Carlson's kick gave Auburn a 23-21 lead with 54 seconds left in the half.
Carlson's kickoff went out of the end zone for a touchback. Alabama's offense began at the Tide 25 with 54 seconds left and owning all of its three timeouts. Sims passed to Cooper on a screen on first down for 11 yards to the Tide 36 with Cooper going out of bounds with 48 seconds left. On the next play, Sims' pass for White across the middle was high and Auburn safety Johnathan Ford intercepted at the Auburn 45. Ford returned it 14 yards to the Tide 41 with 37 seconds left.
On first down, Marshall and Coates hooked up again, this time for 40 yards to the Tide 1, and the clock continued to run after the ball was spotted. Artis-Payne carried at left guard and was stopped by Tide defensive lineman Jarran Reed for a loss of 2 yards at the Tide 3 with 4 seconds left in the half. Auburn called its final timeout of the half. Carlson entered to try a 20-yard field goal. After the teams lined up, Alabama called its first timeout of the half. After the timeout, Carlson's 20-yard field goal was good as time expired. Auburn had a 26-21 lead at halftime.
At halftime, Auburn had gained 383 yards of total offense (255 passing, 128 rushing) compared to Alabama's 178 (129 passing 49 rushing). Auburn had a 17-12 edge in first downs, had run 48 plays from scrimmage to Alabama's 28, and had an 18:20 to 11:40 edge in time of possession. Individually for Auburn, Coates had 153 yards and 2 touchdowns on 4 catches, averaging 38.3 yards per catch. Marshall had completed 11 of 18 pass attempts for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns. Artis-Payne had rushed for 58 yards on 17 carries.
For Alabama, Yeldon had 59 yards on 8 carries and 2 touchdowns. Cooper had 6 catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Sims had completed 10 of 14 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown with 2 interceptions.
Alabama took the kickoff to begin the second half. Christion Jones returned Carlson's kick from the Tide 1 for 37 yards to set up the Alabama offense at the Tide 38. Yeldon gained 3 on a rush at right guard on first down, then a Sims pass was intercepted by Auburn's Johnathan Jones at the Tide 43 and returned 4 yards. The Tigers took over at the Tide 39 with 14:10 on the clock.
On first down, Marshall kept for 4 yards to the Tide 35. A rush by Bray on a jet sweep gained 13 yards at left end to the Tide 22. On second down, Artis-Payne ran at left end for a 1-yard gain as Dalvin Tomlinson and Trey DePriest stopped him. On third and 2 at the a pass by Marshall to Bray along the right sideline was ruled a catch for a 35-yard gain to the Tide 21. Bray and Tide cornerback Bradley Sylve were fighting for the ball as they both landed along the sideline. Officials chose to review the play via replay. Via review, officials ruled that there was possession by both players inbounds and the play stood as originally ruled. Auburn had first down at the Tide 21 with 4:35 on the clock. On first down, Artis-Payne gained 8 yards around right end to the Tide 13. On second and 2, Artis-Payne was dropped for a loss of 3 yards at left guard by Trey DePriest and Dalvin Tomlinson at the Tide 16. On third down a pass to wide open Duke Williams in the left corner of the end zone fell incomplete, forcing a field goal attempt. Carlson's 33-yard field goal was good with 3:30 left and Auburn had a 36-27 lead.
Carlson's kickoff went through the end zone for a touchback and Alabama began at the Tide 25. Sims dropped back to pass and launched a deep pass for Cooper, who caught the ball at the Auburn 28 and outraced Auburn *** to the end zone to complete a 75-yard touchdown strike. Adam Griffith's conversion kick was true and the Auburn lead was cut to 36-34 with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter began with the Alabama offense with first-and-goal at the Auburn 13. On first down, Sims looked to pass then decided to run and gained 2 yards at the right sideline to the Auburn 11. On second down, Sims wanted to pass again, but he chose to keep and raced to the far corner, the left side, to the front pylon and an 11-yard touchdown. With a 4-point lead at 40-36, Alabama chose to go for a two-point conversion. Sims passed to his right and found DeAndrew White, who made the catch while diving and the Tide had a 42-36 lead with 14:33 left in the fourth period.
Scott's' kickoff was taken by Auburn's Corey Grant at the Tiger 4 and returned 22 yards to the Auburn 26. A pass by Marshall for Coates on first down was incomplete. Bray took a jet sweep at left end for a yard to the 27 where Geno Smith brought him down. On third and 9 at the 27, Marshall was sacked for a loss of 4 yards by Xzavier Dickson at the Auburn 23, forcing a punt. Carlson's 44-yard kick was caught by Christion Jones at the Tide 33 and he lost 5 yards on the return. Alabama began at its 28, holding a 4-point lead, with 12:54 on the clock. Both teams had all three timeouts remaining.
From the Tide 33 on first down, a screen pass to Cooper gained 8 yards to the Tide 41. Yeldon took a handoff around left end on the next play for 25 yards to a first down at the Auburn 39. Sims passed deep for Cooper on the next play, but the pass was long and incomplete. On second and 10 at the Auburn 39, a pitch to Yeldon around right tackle was stopped for a loss of 1. On third and 11 from the Auburn 40, Sims found Cooper across the middle for a 15-yard gain and a first down at the Auburn 25. On the next play, a run by Yeldon around left end gained 9 yards to the Auburn 16. On second and 1 at the 16, a 13-yard run by Yeldon went to the Auburn 3, but a holding penalty negated the play and created a second and 11 at the Auburn 26. As the clock moved under 9:00 minutes left, Yeldon rushed at right tackle for 2 yards to the Auburn 6. On second and goal at the 6, Sims rolled right and found White in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Alabama went for two again. Sims rolled right and attempted to run it in, but slipped and fell. Alabama led, 48-36, with 8:05 left in the fourth period.

On the first play, Marshall found Coates on a deep post for 53 yards to the Tide 16 with Geno Smith beat on the play but saving a touchdown. On first down, a screen pass to Marcus Davis gained 2 yards to the Tide 14. A second down pass to Coates in the end zone was bobbled by Coates and almost intercepted but fell incomplete on good coverage by Alabama's Bradley Sylve. On third and 8, a pass for Williams was incomplete in the end zone. On fourth and 8 at the 14, Marshall rolled right and passed complete to Marcus Davis at the 10 but Davis was stopped short of the first down at the Tide 8 by Alabama safety Nick Perry. Alabama regained possession with 6:55 left on the clock.
From the Tide 8 with 6:55 left, the Alabama offense began its next possession. On first down, Yeldon bounced outside around right end for 7 yards to the Tide 15. Yeldon bounced outside right end again on second down, gaining a yard to set up third and 2 at the Tide 16. As the clock ticked under 6:00 left, Sims took a quarterback draw up the middle for 10 yards to a first down at the Tide 26. On the next play, Derrick Henry took a handoff from Sims and went at right tackle, reversed field to the left and broke free on a 49-yard run to the Auburn 25. Henry rushed at left tackle on first down for no gain. On second down with the clock going under 4:00 left, Henry took a handoff at left tackle and broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run with 3:46 left. Griffith's kick was good and Alabama led, 55-36.
Corey Grant took Scott's kickoff at the Auburn 6 and returned it 29 yards to the Auburn 35. Marshall passed to Artis-Payne on first down for a gain of 4 yards to the 39. On second down, Jonathan Allen sacked Marshall for a loss of 2 yards after heavy pressure by linebacker Tim Williams broke down the play. On third down, Marshall threw deep and incomplete near the Tide 20. Auburn faced fourth and 8 from its 37 with 2:21 on the clock. Marshall found Bray for a 13-yard completion and a first down at the 50. A screen pass to Davis gained 5 yards to the Tide 45. With the clock under 2:00, Marshall found Williams for 12 yards and a first down at the Tide 33. Marshall kept for 3 yards on first down, going out of bounds at the Tide 30 with 1:25 on the clock. A pass for Coates in the right corner of the end zone fell incomplete on first down. A pass for Williams on second down was high and incomplete. On third and goal at the 5 with 26 seconds on the clock, Corey Grant took a handoff and ran 5 yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds left. Auburn chose to go for a two-point conversion. Marshall looked to pass, but chose to run it in and did so, narrowing the margin to Alabama 55, Auburn 44.
