TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama defense limited Western Carolina to minus-8 rushing yards while the Crimson Tide offense set a single-game record for first downs as top-ranked Alabama (10-1 overall) overcame a sluggish start to roll to a 48-14 win over Western Carolina (7-5 overall) Saturday before a crowd of 101,325 on Homecoming at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The win was Alabama's 15th straight at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the nation's longest active home winning streak with the annual Iron Bowl matchup with Auburn looming just a week away.
Alabama's offense tallied 615 total yards and a school-record 36 first downs while holding the Catamounts to 213 total yards and dominating play after WCU took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown to an early 7-0 lead over the Tide, the first time in 23 games that an Alabama opponent has opened the game with a touchdown drive.
Crimson Tide wide receiver Amari Cooper tied the Alabama career receptions mark in the game, catching 3 passes in the early going before leaving with a minor injury. The catches moved Cooper's career total to 194, matching the record set by DJ Hall from 2004-07. Alabama quarterback Blake Sims completed 17 of 25 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception as the Tide offense used its skill position players exclusively in the first half before reserves took over with the Tide leading 38-14 at intermission.
Reserve wide receiver Chris Black led the Tide with 101 yards on 6 catches. While sophomore running back Derrick Henry led all rushers with 92 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns on 12 carries, all in the first half. Along the way, Henry became the 55th player in Alabama history to eclipse 1,000 career rushing yards as he now has 1,064 career yards for his career. Reserve backs Tyren Jones and Altee Tenpenny combined for 139 rushing yards for the Tide with Jones gaining 75 and a touchdown on 11 carries while Tenpenny rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries.
For Western Carolina, wide receiver Karnorris Benson had a game-high 9 catches for 118 yards while Spearman Robinson had 5 catches for 45 yards and both of WCU's touchdowns. WCU quarterback Troy Mitchell completed 23 of 39 passes for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Crimson Tide defense was led by safety Landon Collins' 7 tackles. Linebacker Trey DePriest had 5 stops. Alabama's defense had 2 quarterback sacks in the game, 5 tackles for loss and 3 quarterback hurries.
The Tide never punted in the game. Freshman kicker Gunnar Raborn made his debut for Alabama as placekicker Adam Griffith did not play in the game. Raborn's opener was a successful one as he made all 6 extra-point kicks and 2 of 3 field goals. Raborn was good from 20 and 28 yards before missing on a 31-yard attempt.
Western Carolina won the opening coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Alabama chose to defend the North end zone. JK Scott's kickoff sailed into the end zone and was downed for a touchback. Western Carolina began its first possession at its own 25-yard line. Passes by quarterback Troy Mitchell fell incomplete on the first two plays before a pass by Mitchell to wide receiver Spearman Robinson gained 11 yards on third down to a first down at the WCU 26. After a run by tailback Darius Ramsey gained 3 yards over left guard on first down, a pass to wide receiver Karnorris Benson gained 21 yards to the Alabama 40. On the next play, Mitchell and Benson connected for 31 yards on a fly pattern to the Tide 9 as Benson beat Cyrus Jones on the play. A run by Ramsey at left guard gained a yard on first down before a pass to wide receiver Willie Police gained 6 to the Tide 2 on second down. Western Carolina called timeout with 12:02 on the clock to prepare for the third down play from the Tide 2, WCU's first called timeout of the game. From the shotgun a pass by Mitchell to Robinson at the left side gained 2 and a touchdown, capping a 76-yard drive that took 9 plays. Richard Sigmon's extra point kick was good and the Catamounts had a 7-0 lead. WCU's touchdown drive to start the game marked the first time an Alabama opponent has opened a game with a touchdown drive since Texas A&M did so on September 14, 2013, in College Station some 23 games ago.

On second down a rush by running back Derrick Henry at right tackle gained 12 yards to a first down at the WCU 34. The catch was Cooper's 194th of his Alabama career, tying DJ Hall (2004-07) for the Alabama career catches record, but Cooper was injured on the play and left the field via his own power. On the next play, Sims threw to receiver Cam Sims at the left side for a 4-yard touchdown with 7:51 left in the quarter. Gunnar Raborn entered to kick the extra point and he converted his first point-after kick of his career to tie the game at 7-7, capping a 9-play, 52-yard drive that consumed 4:06 of the clock.

A pass by Mitchell intended for Police was incomplete on second down and a run by Newsome on a jet reverse was dropped for a loss of a yard by Landon Collins to set up fourth down. Offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were assessed but the spot of the ball remained the same at the WCU 30 where Blake Metcalf entered the game to punt for WCU. His kick flew 41 yards before Christion Jones fielded it for Alabama at the Tide 29. Jones returned it 20 yards to the Tide 49. A 15-yard penalty on WCU for a personal foul (late hit) tacked on 15 yards to the play, setting Alabama up at the Catamount 34-yard line with 6:25 to play in the quarter. On first down from the shotgun formation, Blake Sims handed off to fullback Jalston Fowler who rumbled up the middle off left guard for 12 yards and a first down at the WCU 22. Off play-action on first down, Sims rolled right and passed to ArDarius Stewart for 16 yards and a first down at the WCU 6. From there a run by Fowler on first down gained 3 yards, then a pass by Sims fell incomplete on second down. That set up third-and-goal at the WCU 3. The third down play was a rollout to the left by Sims who appeared to be looking to pass to Fowler, who was covered, so Sims kept and was stopped for no gain. On fourth down, Raborn attempted a 20-yard field goal. The kick was good and Raborn's first career field goal gave the Tide a 10-7 lead with 4:08 on the clock, capping a 31-yard drive in 6 plays that consumed 2:17 of the clock.

The intercept was the first by Sims in 158 attempts, ending the third-longest streak without an interception in Alabama history.
The Catamounts started the ensuing drive at their own 20. A pass from Mitchell to Benson on first down gained 6 yards to the 26. After an incompletion on second down, WCU was assessed a 13-yard penalty for an illegal crack-back block, moving the ball to the WCU 13. On second down a pass to Benson gained 4 yard before an incompletion on third down forced a punt from the WCU 17. Destry Barnwell's punt for 39 yards reached the Tide 44 where Christion Jones fielded it but lost 7 yards before going out of bounds at the Tide 37

On the next play a rush by Henry at left tackle gained 3 yards to the WCU 48, ending the first period. Scott's kickoff was downed in the end zone for a touchback. WCU started at its own 25-yard line. Mitchell's pass to Benson on first down gained 9 yards to the WCU 34. On second down Mitchell's screen pass to a wide-open Ramsey gained 12 yards to the WCU 46 along the left sideline and a 15-yard personal foul penalty for a late hit out of bounds moved the ball to the Tide 39. On first down a pass for Ramsey was incomplete as Cyrus Jones broke it up. On second down Mitchell eluded pressure and scrambled for a gain of 3 yards to the Tide 36. On third and 7 from the Tide 36, Mitchell's pass intended for Robinson fell incomplete. That set up a punt with Barnwell in to kick for WCU. Barnwell's 30-yard rugby-style kick was low and rolled to the Tide 6 where it was downed with 10:54 on the clock.
On first down a run by Henry around left end gained 6 yards to the Tide 12, but he fumbled as he was hit while going down. The hit by WCU linebacker Christon Gill caused the fumble and WCU defensive lineman John McBeth at the Alabama 12 with 10:46 on the clock. Henry was originally ruled down on the play before fumbling, but a video review revealed that he had fumbled and the call was reversed, giving the Catamounts a first-and-goal at the Tide 12.
On first down from the Tide 12, Mitchell passed complete to Robinson who caught the ball over the shoulders of Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson in tight coverage at the front corner of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown. ON second and 15 at the Tide 48, a pass to Chris Black gained 14 yards to the WCU 38, but a run by Fowler on third and 1 at the 38 a run at left tackle by Fowler did not gain yardage as WCU's Christon Gill stopped Fowler cold on the play at the line of scrimmage. A run by Newsome at right guard on first down was stopped for no gain by Xzavier Dickson and Trey DePriest. Consecutive incompletions on the next two plays forced a punt and Barnwell kicked it 47 yards to Cyrus Jones at the Tide 28.
