NCAA Softball Tuscaloosa Regional
Pre-regional Press Conference
Head Coach Donley Canary
Opening Statement:
“We are excited to be here playing in a regional tournament. It’s exciting for our program and great for our players. Even though it’s going to be kind of a David and Goliath match-up, we are excited.”
On what he can take away from his last regional:
“We started three freshmen in the infield, and we’ve tried to impress upon them quickness and speed. It’s going to be a step faster, there’s no doubt about that. Whether or not they understand it or not, I don’t know. Another thing we take from this is that we are building on the program. It’s a chance to showcase our program and the university since we are playing against probably the No. 1 school in the Southeast. It will be intimidating, and we can get beat, but what an experience for these kids to get out there on the field and play. My three seniors were with me in 2009, and they talked with me about getting back to a regional tournament and winning a ring. We have won three out of the last four years and they have rings. It’s been a great opportunity. Hopefully we will put our program on the map.”
#13, Chelsea Jones, Pitcher
On the challenges she faces as a pitcher against Alabama, and how she throws:
“I probably don’t know as much about Alabama’s lineup as my catcher does. I usually leave all the hard thinking up to her, so it’s ok. As a senior, there’s not much I can do except make sure my pitches are working. It’s not like I can go out there and add a new pitch right before the end of my senior year. Basically, I just need to make sure all my pitches are working and go out there and give it my all.”
#32, Leah Taylor, Utility
On the expectations of the game even with Alabama on its home field:
“Going into this, everybody has been talking about David and Goliath. We’ve kind of been expecting that this week. The story that is in the bible has inspired us to come out here and give it our all and play our hardest.”
