TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The University of Alabama track and field team remains in state this weekend when it travels to Auburn, Ala., for the Auburn War Eagle Invitational on April 20-21.
In addition to the host, Auburn, the Crimson Tide will be joined by two other SEC programs in Georgia and Mississippi State. Also scheduled to compete are Alabama A&M, UAB, Alabama State, Columbia, Columbus State, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Mercer, Memphis, Penn State, Shorter, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Troy, Valdosta State and West Florida.
Events get underway on Friday evening with the men's hammer throw and women's javelin at 4:30 p.m. at the Hutsell-Rosen Track. The women's hammer throw, which has produced great success this year through the efforts of Angelica Howard and Amethyst Holmes will start at 7 p.m. The invitational sections of the men's and women's 1,500 and 5,000 meters will close out action on Friday.
Field events continue on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the pole vault, and long jump, and continue throughout the afternoon. Action on the oval begins at 1 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relays and continues until 6:30 p.m.
The Tide aims to use the War Eagle Invitational to build upon the momentum it generated courtesy of solid weekend in its last outing at the Spec Towns Invitation where it got wins in four events and 34 top-10 finishes at the Spec Towns Invitational. To date, the Crimson Tide has recorded 35 personal bests this outdoor season as it enters the stretch run of the 2011-12 campaign under first-year head coach Dan Waters.
The Tide will travel next to the annual Drake Relays held in Des Moines, Iowa from April 26-28 for one of the largest and most prestigiout outdoor meets in the country.
