LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 15th-ranked women's tennis team swept Kentucky in Lexington, 7-0, on Sunday, bringing its record to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in Southeastern Conference play. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-9 on the season and 0-6 in the league.
"We got a good win today facing a very hungry Kentucky team today," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "They are definitely improving. They had a lot of spirit and fight today. They never went away and competed hard against us today. Our team did a good job of getting out early, starting in doubles. We were relentless and didn't give away anything. I like the way we finished, especially with this match being on the road. Overall, this was a great match."
Alabama junior Alexa Guarachi and senior Courtney McLane took an easy 8-1 victory over Wildcat sophomore Khristina Blajkevitch and junior Jessica Stiles on court one. Court two clinched the doubles point for the Crimson Tide when sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane and junior Antonia Foehse held Kentucky sophomore Caitlin McGraw and freshman Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff scoreless in an 8-0 victory. After being tied at 5-5, Alabama senior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Yasmine Ebada pulled away from Wildcat sophomore Marni Venter to win court three, 8-6.
In singles play, Alabama kept up the pressure with quick wins on courts two and one. Guarachi finished up first on court two with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Blajkevitch. Macfarlane put the Tide up 3-0 with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Stiles. McLane clinched the match for Alabama with her dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory on court three over McGraw. Foehse finished next, downing Morin-Kougoucheff 6-3, 6-4 on court five. Freshman Emily Zabor ground out a 7-5 first set victory before taking the second set against Venter 6-3. Sophomore Alex Clay was the last to finish, winning her first set in a tiebreak 7-6 before dropping the second set 4-6 and taking the tiebreak in lieu of a third set 10-5 over Kentucky freshman Stephanie Fox.
