NEW ORLEANS - The second-ranked Alabama women's golf team moved up to eighth place on Monday after 36 holes of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on the par-72, 6,105-yard English Turn Country Club.
The Crimson Tide fired a 10-over round of 298 for a 23-over-par total of 599 heading into Tuesday's final round. Southern California maintained its tournament lead with a 4-over-par 292 in round two for a 36-hole total of 9-over 585. Duke is second at 589 with Colorado in third at 590, Baylor fourth at 591 and Florida fifth at 593.
"We were a little better today," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We just couldn't avoid those mistakes that really kill your momentum. We are hitting it well enough to get back in contention, we just have to eliminate those mistakes and keep pars and bogeys from turning into double bogeys.
"This is a good experience for us going forward. The conditions are very difficult with a gusting wind and narrow greens that make you control your distance. This will help us be a better golf team later in the year."
Junior Jennifer Kirby continues to pace the Tide individually at 3-over 147, which leaves her in a tie for 10th place. The Paris, Ontario, Canada, native shot 2-over 74 on Monday.
Sophomore Stephanie Meadow turned in Alabama's low round of the day at even-par 72. She enters the final round at 3-over-par 148 in a tie for 16th position.
Brooke Pancake shot 75 on Monday and boasts a 36-hole total of 7-over 151 and is in a tie for 36th. Freshman Johanna Tillström recorded her second straight 77 and is tied for 50th. Hannah Collier struggled home with an 80 in round two and is in 59th. Courtney McKim shot 80 in round two playing as an individual.
The Crimson Tide will tee off Tuesday morning for the final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. UA will play with Auburn and Texas A&M in round three.
