TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 2 University of Alabama women's golf team travels to New Orleans, La., on Sunday to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate that will be played on the 6,105-yard, par-72 English Turn Golf Course.
"We get the spring started this weekend at English Turn, which is a great course that the PGA Tour played for years," Alabama head coach Mic Potter. "We are always excited to go to New Orleans, it is a great city to visit. But the biggest thing is seeing where we stand, and continuing where we left off in the fall with a big win over UCLA.
"We want to kind of forget scores, forget about winning or losing, but really concentrate on the shot at hand. We don't want the past or the future to affect how we play the next shot. We want to win, we do this to win, but we really have to think long term about improving every day."
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate will host several of the college game's best teams. The 15 team field includes nine ranked teams with No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Southern California, No. 12 Florida, No. 14 Duke, No. 17 Texas A&M, No. 19 Oregon, No. 21 Baylor and No. 24 Colorado.
Also competing this weekend is Tulsa, Florida State, Mississippi, host school Tulane, East Carolina and Kennesaw State.
Alabama put together a successful fall season with two consecutive second-place finishes at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview and the Tar Heel Invitational. The Crimson Tide then put the finishing touches on the fall slate with a win at the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge. Alabama captured team honors with a four-stroke victory over No. 1 UCLA.
In addition to the team win this fall, the Crimson Tide also recorded two individual tournament medalists. At the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview, junior Jennifer Kirby tied for first while shooting a four-under-par 212. At the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge, sophomore Stephanie Meadow finished at five-under par, which earned her medalist honors.
The Crimson Tide will start the aforementioned Kirby and Meadow this weekend, along with senior All-American Brooke Pancake, sophomore Hannah Collier and freshman Johanna Tillström. Courtney McKim will also compete as an individual this weekend.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate will run Sunday to Tuesday with Sunday's first round beginning at 8 a.m. (CST).
