TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's basketball team posted an 81-27 victory over Auburn University in Montgomery on Sunday in the Crimson Tide's lone exhibition game of the season. The Crimson Tide was led on offense by juniors Kyra Crosby and Celiscia Farmer, who tallied 15 points apiece.
"I thought for our first exhibition game we played well," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "From what I'm looking at, it's not the score but the intensity level. That was where it should have been, and it stayed that way. I thought that consistently, from a defensive standpoint, we did a very good job of taking away everything that they wanted to run and played the way we needed to play regardless of who we were playing."
The Tide opened the game with a three-pointer from senior Ericka Russell and never looked back, leading for the entire game. In the first half, Alabama made six three-pointers and shot 46 percent behind the arc, to help the Tide to a 43-18 halftime lead.
Alabama also had 14 points off turnovers and was strong on the boards, edging Auburn-Montgomery, 29-19 in rebounds.
The Tide had nine steals in the second half, leading to 19 points off of turnovers and finished with 19 total assists. In addition, the Alabama bench outscored the Warhawks 36-11, and had 33 points off turnovers.
Joining Crosby and Farmer with double-digit points in the game was sophomore Shafontaye Myers, who added 12, and junior Erin Hogue and sophomore Jasmine Robinson, who each had 10 points. Leading the Tide in rebounds were juniors Meghan Perkins and Farmer with nine apiece. In addition, all but two of the 11 players that entered the game recorded an assist.
"We are really excited about the way we made the extra pass," added Hudson. "We had 19 assists, and we were sitting out on the bench thinking about when the last time we had that many. It doesn't matter who we are playing, we shared the basketball. We probably should have had 35 assists because we missed so many wide open shots. We were really pleased with that type of effort."
The Tide will host Nicholls State in its first regular-season contest of the season on Saturday, November 12. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT in Foster Auditorium.
