FLUSHING, N.Y. - Junior Alexa Guarachi and sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane fell in a hard-fought battle in their doubles match, while Macfarlane was also edged in her singles match on Thursday at the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
The Crimson Tide began the day with doubles where Guarachi and Macfarlane were narrowly edged out by the tournament's No. 1 seed in Stanford's Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs, 9-7. With the match tied at 6-6, the Cardinal would break for a 7-6 lead before Alabama evened the score again at 7-7. Stanford picked up another break in the next game and closed the match out on its serve to advance in the main draw.
"We played well and did a lot of really good things," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. We needed to be more aggressive though. We started the match too defensively. There were some pivotal games we had to get, and we did not get them. That was the difference in the end. Credit goes to Stanford. They are a great team."
In singles, Macfarlane led 2-1 in the opening set before North Carolina's Lauren McHale rattled off five-straight games to take the first, 6-2. The second set remained on serve until late when McHale earned a break for the 7-5 victory.
"Mary Anne starts most of her matches looking to dictate and just was unable to do that today," said Mainz. "I think she needed to be more aggressive and step forward more. Lauren played a very good match, but Mary Anne did not have her best day."
Matches will resume on Friday at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
