ST. THOMAS, USVI - Freshman Aneesah Daniels led four Crimson Tide players in double figures to lift the women's basketball team to a 62-56 overtime victory against Seton Hall on Friday at the 2011 Paradise Jam. Eleven of the Tide's final 18 points came from Daniels as did a pair of offensive rebounds with less than 19 seconds remaining in the bonus period to keep the ball in Alabama's possession down the stretch.
Joining Daniels in double figures was senior Ericka Russell with 12, sophomore Jasmine Robinson with 11 and sophomore Khristin Lee with 10. Junior Erin Hogue came up big defensively for the Tide, roping in 10 rebounds and three steals.
"We didn't have that lull in today's game that we did yesterday," said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. "We had a lot of young ladies toughen up and play a lot of minutes in this game. It was really a great team effort, and I am very proud of them."
Seton Hall struck first with a basket at the 19:06 mark to take the early lead. Russell countered with a three-pointer on the next possession to put Alabama in front 3-2. The game would go back and forth over the duration of the half, but it would be the Pirates holding a two-point edge at halftime, 26-24.
Seton Hall's Brittany Morris buried a three with just over two minutes played in the second, giving the Pirates their largest lead of the game. Russell then scored five consecutive points to even the score at 29 with 16:50 to play. Daniels would give the Tide its first lead in nearly 17 minutes, scoring a free throw at the 15:07 mark. From there, Alabama embarked on a 14-4 run to take a 43-33 lead. Seton Hall responded, outscoring the Tide 14-6 to pull within two with 2:44 remaining in regulation. Alabama stayed in front until another three from a wide-open Morris went through the net with 30 seconds to go.
In overtime, Daniels connected on a pair of free throws with just over one minute played to put the Tide on top. The Pirates tied the score with their only basket from the floor in overtime on the ensuing possession, settling for one additional free throw for the remainder of the game. Alabama would tack on an additional seven points.
The Tide had 10 steals in the game compared to Seton Hall's one and forced 29 Pirate turnovers, while only committing 12.
Alabama will play its final game of the tournament on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. CT when it takes on Louisiana Tech.
