TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Brent Leyser was presented with a Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Summer Service Award this week at a ceremony held in the council chambers at City Hall.
"It's definitely an honor to receive this award, especially to be considered with the firefighters that do this on a regular basis," Leyser said. "Fortunately this is not something we have to do very often; however I'm glad I was able to do my job and perform the tasks I have been trained on."
Leyser, who works primarily with the volleyball team, was assisting with women's basketball camp last month when one of the attending coaches lost consciousness and stopped breathing. From there, Leyser performed C.P.R. and used an Automated External Defibrillator until the fire department arrived on the scene to transport the individual.
"At the time it was important for me to go through to steps in my training," Leyser added. "Instinct and training took over from that point."
This is the first time the city has recognized individuals for life-saving acts, however it hopes to have two ceremonies per year in the future.
