TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama sophomore left-hander Adam Morgan has been named the Primetime National Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball360.com, the website announced Wednesday morning.
Morgan was recognized for his accomplishments in the Crimson Tide's 4-1 series-opening win over Vanderbilt on March 19 in Tuscaloosa. The Marietta, Ga., native shut out the Southeastern Conference's top hitting team through six innings, ultimately allowing only one run and six hits through 6 2/3 innings. He added three strikeouts and three walks.
The Commodores entered the game with a gaudy .352 batting average while averaging nearly nine runs and 12 hits per game through the first 17 games of the season. Morgan did not allow a Vanderbilt runner to reach second based until there were two outs in the seventh inning, which is also when VU managed its only extra base hit of the day.
Alabama's offense scored three runs in the fourth inning off Vanderbilt ace and projected first-round draft pick Sonny Gray. Senior third baseman Jake Smith hit a two-out solo home run and junior catcher Brock Bennett capped the inning with a two-run single in support of Morgan.
