TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In an effort to raise awareness about hunger in the community, Crimson Tide student-athletes from all sports will be collecting canned food donations outside the Brunos supermarket on McFarland Boulevard this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The drive is part of the SEC Together We 'Can' Campaign. Schools across the Southeastern Conference have been collecting donations since September 18, with the drive lasting until this Saturday, September 27.
Last year, the SEC raised more than 150,000 pounds of food. This year, Alabama athletes are hoping to beat last year's total of 700 pounds. The drive is sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, led by SAAC president Allyson Angle, a senior on the Tide's swimming and diving team.
"This is certainly a worthwhile effort," Jill Lancaster, Director of Alabama's Life Skills and Community Outreach program, said "Student-athletes feel like this is an important way that they are able to give back to the community in which they live and compete."
All donations will be delivered to the West Alabama Food Bank in Tuscaloosa. In addition, points will be earned for the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive for each can donated. Donations can also be brought to bins set up in Bryant Hall on the Alabama campus until Saturday.
