LUBBOCK, Texas - With three seconds remaining in the final overtime Alabama turned to a Texas native to earn the thrilling victory in Lubbock. Senior Kelsey King buried the game-winner in dramatic fashion to hand the Crimson Tide a 2-1 victory over host Texas Tech at the Red Raider Classic Friday night. With the win Alabama evens its record at 3-3 on the season.
"I am so proud of how mentally tough we were tonight and how we were able to fight and hang in there," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "We may have felt we were out-played at times but we are ecstatic to leave with a win in front of such a hostile crowd. This is the most dramatic win I have ever been a part of."
With three seconds left on the clock in the second and final overtime King was able to clean up a loose ball in the Texas Tech box after a Grace Lawson pass and found the net far post from 12 yards out. The Crimson Tide immediately cleared the bench in celebration.
Alabama opened the scoring in the 27th minute when junior Victoria Frederick tallied her fourth goal on the season. The Huntsville, Ala., native collected a pass from freshman Kaitlyn Smith in midstride and beat the keeper far post for the first strike.
The Red Raiders countered in the 59th minute when Dawn Ward found the back of the net on the right side off a pass from Conner Williams.
Alabama sophomore goalkeeper Justine Bernier put together her best performance of the year as Texas Tech fired off 30 shots and Bernier made a season-high 10 saves. The Crimson Tide was efficient as it tallied six shots and put four of them on goal.
The Crimson Tide will try and claim the Red Raider Classic title as it will face TCU, who won its match earlier in the day. The two teams will square off on Sunday, Sept. at 11 a.m. CT.
