LUBBOCK, Texas - The Alabama soccer team claimed the 2009 Red Raider Classic by downing TCU 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the new John Walker Complex. Junior Brooke Rogers tallied the game-winner to hand the Crimson Tide its second straight win. Alabama improves to 4-3 on the season.
Rogers supplied the Crimson Tide with all the offense it would need by finding the back of the net in the 49th minute. The junior forward took advantage of a Horned Frog turnover in the box by beating the keeper to the upper left of the frame for the only tally.
Alabama sophomore goalkeeper Justine Bernier was arguably the player of the tournament with her play in between the pipes. The Canadian international made eight saves to earn her first shutout of the 2009 campaign. Bernier totaled 18 saves in the Classic and allowed only one goal in 199 minutes of play.
Alabama was out-shot 19-8 but came out of the intermission strong, firing off seven shots in the second half. Rogers led Alabama with three shots, putting two on frame. The Crimson Tide was efficient once again by putting five its eight shots on frame.
Alabama will continue its road trip by opening up Southeastern Conference play. The Crimson Tide will head to Mississippi to face the Rebels on Friday, Sept. 25 and then close out the weekend against Mississippi State on Sunday, Sept. 27.
