JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - A pair of freshmen led the Alabama soccer team to its first victory of 2009. The Crimson Tide downed the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on the road by the score of 2-1 Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field. After the win Alabama improves to 1-2 on the season.
The Gamecocks opened the scoring in the 52nd minute of play when Amber DeLaney found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. But the Crimson Tide rallied right back and evened the score less than 30 seconds later.
Newcomer Kaitlyn Smith tallied the first goal on the season for Alabama and the first of her collegiate career when she scored unassisted from the left side of the field at the 51:56 mark.
Alabama tallied the game-winner when fellow newcomer Amanda Ortegon took a Victoria Frederick pass and buried her first collegiate goal to hand the Crimson Tide a 2-1 win at the 70:42 mark.
The Crimson Tide out-shot the Gamecocks 15-8, including a 9-4 advantage in the second half. Junior Victoria Frederick led all players with three shots, putting two on goal. Four other members of the Tide rallied off two shots apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Justine Bernier earned her first win in between the pipes after returning from U-20 World Cup play with Team Canada. Bernier made two saves and allowed a goal to get into the win column.
Alabama showed its offensive intensity all game long as the Crimson Tide recorded 13 corner kicks and held Jacksonville State to zero.
The Crimson Tide returns home for a single contest next week against South Alabama. The two teams will kickoff at the Alabama Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
