TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama sophomore-to-be Bud Cauley continued his hot play this summer with a tie for ninth place at the prestigious Northeast Amateur Invitational in Rumford, R.I., over the weekend.
Cauley shot 273 (-3) in the 72-hole tournament on the par-69, 6,688-yard Wannamoisett Country Club Golf Course to earn a spot in the top 10.
Cauley played his best 18 holes in the second round when he holed four birdies without surrendering a single bogey for a 65 (-4). He also finished below par in the first and final rounds with matching 68s (-1).
Recent Alabama graduate Matthew Swan played the tournament as well finishing tied for 34th with a 279 (+3). Swan saved his best round for last, firing a 67 (-2) with four birdies in the final round.
Since his freshman campaign for the Crimson Tide ended, Cauley has received several accolades including being named to the All-Nicklaus Team and selected as a first-team Golfweek All-American.
The Jacksonville, Fla. native was also one of eight American players to compete in the Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event pitting amateurs from the United States against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland.
The Northeast Amateur is a prestigious invitation-only tournament held each year at the Wannamoisett Country Club. Contestants are selected based on their competitive record and accomplishments in major tournaments.
Former champions include current PGA Tour pros Anthony Kim (2004), Luke Donald (2000, 2001) and David Duval (1992). Dan Woltman, a University of Wisconsin graduate, took the title this year with an 11-under 265.
