SKILLMAN, N.J. - The women's tennis team has been honored as the March recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Sportsmanship Award, which was announced by the ITA.
"This is quite an honor as competing with integrity is at the forefront of our program," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "I am moved by this prestigious award and thank my team for its commitment to excellence."
The ITA National Team Sportsmanship Award, given out monthly since 2003, goes to one men's and one women's team that best exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct in the true spirit of competition and collegiate tennis. Winners are selected by the ITA Ethics and Infractions Committee from nominations received from member institutions on all levels including NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
The Crimson Tide was nominated for its play at the Wildcat Invitational on January 16 - 18 when Mainz had to leave the night before the tournament due to the passing of her father. The ITA said, "With heavy hearts, the team played every match during the course of the tournament with incredible passion and energy while exhibiting sportsmanship that truly represented themselves as ambassadors of the sport."
"I am proud of our team for displaying tremendous sportsmanship while competing in the Wildcat Invitational," added Mainz. "They played inspiring tennis throughout the weekend and battled courageously. They have been consistent all season with competing with class, dignity and pride. Each week they put it all out on the line with good gamesmanship."
The Crimson Tide will wrap up its regular season Saturday, April 18 when it hosts instate rival Auburn for a 5:00 p.m. (CST) start.
