BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 2 ranked Alabama Softball team earned the sweep over instate rival UAB by defeating the Blazers 6-3 Tuesday night at George Ward Park. The Crimson Tide plated six runs on 12 hits to improve to 18-2 on the season. UAB drops to 8-11 on the year.
The Crimson Tide opened its scoring in the third when freshman Jennifer Fenton drilled a triple off the left-center field wall to drive in senior Brittany Rogers. The All-American reached on a single and stole second before scoring.
Alabama added two more in the fifth when senior Kelley Montalvo belted her fourth home run on the season, bringing home Fenton who reached on an error. Montalvo connected on a 2-1 pitch from UAB hurler Lindsey Croft.
UA kept scoring by plating one in the sixth and two more in the seventh. In the sixth senior Lauren Parker smacked a double and after advancing to third was able to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Kendall Dawson.
In the seventh Parker struck again when she drilled a single up the middle that scored Montalvo. Parker then was able to score when freshman Jazlyn Lunceford singled to center field.
UAB scored twice in the sixth and once more in the seventh before being shutdown. Andrea Rogers and Laura Callaway collected two hits apiece for the Blazers.
Freshman Amanda Locke improved to 4-0 on the season after allowing three hits and two runs while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Junior Charlotte Morgan earned her first save of the season after tossing 1 2/3 of one run relief.
Montalvo belted her fourth home run of the season after a 2-for-3 performance from the plate that included two runs and two RBI. Parker and Rogers both added three hits apiece.
Alabama will host Mississippi Valley State in a twin-bill on Thursday, March 12 with the first game slated for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
