TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama women's golf team and head coach Mic Potter landed one of the top prospects of the 2010 class, signing Stephanie Meadow to a national letter of intent on Monday. Meadow hails from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, and is the seventh-ranked junior in the world in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index.
Meadow, who is the third-highest rated golfer in the 2010 class by Golfweek/Sagarin Index, moved overseas to the United States at age 14 to pursue her golf dream and attended the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy.
"Being from Ireland, I didn't have any preconceptions about schools when I started looking, so I visited a lot of different schools," Meadow said. "I looked for a good school, because academics are very important to me, and a good golf program. I was also looking for a great coach and there is no doubt that Mic Potter is the best college coach out there, so that really helped me make my decision."
Meadow has assembled an extraordinary résumé during her junior career that includes nine individual titles on the International Junior Golf Tour since 2006. She recently won the Golfweek Junior Invitational for the second straight year, the first time that feat has ever been accomplished, and was named the Golfweek Junior Player of the Week.
Meadow also represents Ireland in international play and helped lead her team to the European Girls' Team Championship for the first time. Meadow was unbeaten in foursomes and singles during the event.
"Stephanie is one of the outstanding juniors not only in the country but on an international scene as well," said Potter. "Her Irish team won the European Girl's Championship this past summer. She just completed a victory at the Golfweek Invitational, and she will be one of the great players in Alabama women's golf history."
Meadow will join an Alabama golf team in 2010-11 that is becoming a mainstay in the nation's top 10. The Crimson Tide finished the fall season ranked No. 9 and has earned a trip to the NCAA Championships each of the past four years. Meadow is the daughter of Robert and Louise Meadow.
