ATHENS, Ga. - The Alabama soccer team opened the week with a 3-0 loss on the road to No. 22 ranked Georgia Thursday night at the UGA Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs scored all three goals in a four minute span to improve to 13-3-1 overall and 6-3-0 in Southeastern Conference play while the Crimson Tide move to 6-8-1 on the year and 2-5-1 in conference action.
"It was a very strange game," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "We just can't beat ourselves up over this one and just get ready for Tennessee on Sunday. I was pleased with how we held up after going to 10 players. It was just a lot of defending and trying for the counterattack."
Georgia's leading offensive threat Carrie Patterson opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she found the back of the net on a breakaway. Patterson tallied her ninth on the season when she took advantage of a turnover deep and broke free.
Just over two minutes later Georgia struck again. Caroline Simpson connected on the second goal in the 21st minute when she headed in a Rebekah Perry cross. Perry served a deep cross far post and Simpson knocked it in near post to give UGA the 2-0 advantage.
Ashley Miller capped off the scoring in the 23rd minute when she found the net in the upper corner of the goal. Miller fired off a great shot from the corner of the box and found the coveted upper-v for the tally.
At that point Alabama was playing with 10 on the field as senior defender Alex Butera was issued a red card in the 22nd minute.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Crimson Tide 22-1. Patterson led all players with four shots. Junior midfielder Rosaly Petriello recorded the lone Alabama shot.
Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier recorded nine saves on the night. The sophomore has now recorded five or more saves in 10 of the last 11 matches.
Alabama will return home to face Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The match will be televised on Comcast Sports South with Chris Stewart and Cameron Broome calling the action.
