TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team closed out the weekend with a 2-0 loss to Tennessee Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. After the day the Lady Vols improve to 8-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in conference play while the Crimson Tide falls to 6-9-1 on the season and 2-6-1 in league action.
"I thought our play in the first half was a positive," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "I had no reason to believe that things would be different in the second half. I felt like we lost our momentum in the second half. Overall the chances that we missed in the first half was the difference in the game."
In a half that was dominated by the Crimson Tide it was the Lady Vols that took the early lead. On its first shot of the contest Tennessee found the back of the net.
Off a throw in deep in the Alabama defensive third the ball got loose in the box after a missed clearance and found the foot of Amy Harrison. In the 11th minute Harrison took advantage of the tip by Chelsea Hatcher as she took possession and fired near post to give the Lady Vols the early 1-0 lead.
Alabama out-shot Tennessee 10-5 in the period and had numerous chances inside the box of the Lady Vols. Junior Grace Lawson fired far post early in the first half but a great save by Molly Baird kept the score 1-0. The Crimson Tide constantly set up chances on the right side of the field but was unable to connect on the last touch for the equalizer.
Tennessee added another in the 76th minute when SEC leading scorer Mick Imgram found the back of the net. Imgram was rewarded for her through run on the right side of the Alabama box by Julie Edwards. Imgram collected the pass and beat Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier far post from 10 yards out to hand UT the 2-0 lead.
After having a big shot advantage in the first half the Lady Vols came out and fired off eight shots in the second half compared to three by the Crimson Tide. The two teams finished the match with 13 shots apiece.
Imgram and Emily Dowd led Tennessee with three shots each while Alabama had five different players fire off two shots apiece. Baird earned the shutout for Tennessee on the strength of six saves while Bernier made five stops.
Alabama will wrap up its home portion of the schedule against rival Auburn. The two instate foes will meet on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
