TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team opened its fall slate with two victories Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Tide opened play in Fall Brawl I with a 3-2 win over Georgia Perimeter and then capped off the day with a 9-1 victory over Jacksonville State.
"It was great to get back out there and be put in a live situation," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "The freshmen got their first game action and we were able to see some things that we need to work on."
Game 1
The Alabama softball team got two late runs in the sixth inning to propel itself to a 3-2 victory over Georgia Perimeter in the opening contest of Fall Brawl I Sunday afternoon.
Alabama sophomore Jennifer Fenton led off the sixth with a walk and then promptly stole second. Freshman Courtney Conley took advantage as she drilled a single to right-center to even the score. Senior Jessica Smith then drove in the eventual game-winner when she doubled to left-center to plate Conley from second.
The Crimson Tide opened its scoring with a single run in the second inning. Conley tripled to right-center to bring home pinch-runner Lisa Elizondo.
Alabama sophomore hurler Amanda Locke tossed all seven innings. The righthander allowed two runs on two hits and struck out six.
Conley was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in her Alabama debut. Smith added two hits and a RBI.
Game 2
In a rematch of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional the Alabama softball team handled Jacksonville State once again. This time it was newcomer Lauren Sewell who did the damage in the circle. The rookie struck out 10 in five innings and allowed one run on three hits while not issuing a walk.
Alabama opened the contest in a big way by plating six runs in the first inning. Sophomore Cassandra Reilly-Boccia got the Tide on the board by taking a pitch in the shoulder with the bases loaded. Conley continued her hot day by driving in her third run on a single to right.
Sophomore catcher Kendall Dawson followed with a double to the right-center wall that plated Conley and Locke. Junior Catherine Dozier capped off the inning with a double of her own down the left field line to score pinch-runner Kayla Braud.
Alabama put the game away in the fourth inning when it tacked on three more runs. An error that could have ended the inning brought two Alabama runs home and Locke concluded the scoring with a RBI single through the left side to score Whitney Larsen.
Conley again paced the Tide at the plate, this time with a 2-for-3 effort, adding a run and a RBI. Locke batted 1-for-3, scored twice and added a RBI.
