TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team closed out the weekend in heartbreaking fashion as it fell 1-0 to Vanderbilt in overtime Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. After the day the Crimson Tide move to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in Southeastern Conference play.
"It just didn't happen for us today," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "As good as we were Friday night we were as bad today. The energy and emotion just wasn't there. Vanderbilt played hard and deserved the win."
Four minutes into overtime Emily Grant tallied the game-winner. Grant gathered a Megan Forester pass and drilled a shot from 30 yards out that found the upper right corner to hand the Commodores the thrilling victory.
Vanderbilt out-shot Alabama 16-6, including a 7-1 mark in the second half. Crimson Tide goalkeeper Justine Bernier tallied six saves in the 94 minutes played.
Molly Kinsella led all players with six shots, putting one on frame. Freshman Kaitlyn Smith and junior Victoria Frederick paced the Crimson Tide with two shots apiece.
Alabama did have its opportunities but couldn't capitalize as it earned nine corner kicks, six coming in the first half.
Alabama will hit the road for a single contest on Thursday, Oct. 22 against Georgia before returning home for a Sunday matinee against Tennessee. Alabama will kickoff in Athens at 7:00 p.m. and then return home for a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday.
