TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's golf team picked up yet another top 10 preseason ranking. The Crimson Tide was tabbed No. 10 by Golfweek in its annual preseason rankings that came out this week. Alabama was also picked No. 10 by Golfworld to start the 2008-09 campaign.
"We have depth," head coach Mic Potter said. "We had some last year, but we're deeper still. I think we can be solidly in the top 10 if we play to our capabilities."
Only one other Southeastern Conference team was also picked in the Top 10 as Georgia checked in right before the Crimson Tide at No. 9. The Pac-10 duo of UCLA and Arizona State were picked 1-2, respectively while Duke rounded out the top three.
Alabama is coming off a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championship and brings back all its talent except graduated senior Sarah Sturm. The 12th-place finish is the second-best finish for the Crimson Tide in school history at an NCAA Championship. Alabama has improved its finish every season at the NCAA Championship under Potter.
Golfweek tabbed senior Kathleen Ekey as the go-to-girl for the Crimson Tide. Ekey was also named a Player to Watch by Golfworld, as the publication made a list of the top-50 players in the nation.
Ekey was named an honorable mention All-American after her play at the NCAA Championship. The Wadsworth, Ohio native finished the year with a school record scoring average of 73.30, bettering the 73.44 average of All-American Jenny Suh. Ekey also recorded the best single round in the history of the program with a 65 at the Crimson Tide Classic.
Potter will lead the women's golf team into the 2008 schedule with its first tournament of the season. The Crimson Tide will head to Owings Mills, Md. to play in the NCAA Fall Preview on Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Caves Valley Golf Club.
