CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Alabama women's golf team posted the second lowest 54-hole score in team history at the Cougar Classic and took second place in the 22-team tournament. The No. 10 ranked Crimson Tide shot the low round on the final day at the Yeamans Hall golf course Tuesday with a 282 (-6), to make a run at the leader Georgia that came up just short.
UA finished the Cougar Classic with an 863 (-1), only the second time in team history that the Tide has shot under par for a 54-hole tournament. The other time came at the 2008 Crimson Tide Classic where the Tide took the team title and shot an all-time low 861 (-3). Alabama's final round 282 also tied for the second lowest 18-hole score in team history behind only a 279 at the Crimson Tide Classic.
After taking a 14-stroke lead into the final round, Georgia held on to win the title over Alabama by five strokes with an 858 (-6). Florida State senior Caroline Westrup won the individual title with a score of 206 (-10).
Sophomore Courtney Harter led the Tide's push on day three firing a bogey-free 67 (-5) to finish the tournament in a tie for 14th with a 217 (+1). The final round 67 is the lowest score of the season thus far for UA and ties Harter's career low score for 18 holes that she set last year at the Wildcat Invitational.
Two Tide golfers finished in the top 10 of the individual standings. Sophomore Camilla Lennarth took a seventh place finish after narrowly missing the top 10 in Alabama's first tournament of the season at the Duramed Fall Preview. Lennarth posted a 70 (-2) in the third round using five birdies on the final day to wrap up the tournament with a 212 (-4) and secure her spot in the top 10.
Senior Kathleen Ekey shot even par 72 to lock down a tie for ninth with a final score of 214 (-2). Ekey shot par or better in all three rounds of the tournament and notched her first top 10 of the season after finishing with a team high six last year.
Freshman Brooke Pancake, coming off a top 10 finish in her first ever tournament for UA, shot her third straight round of 74 (+2) to finish at 222 (+6) in a tie for 32nd. Junior Helena Blomberg knocked in a birdie in her second-to-last hole to ensure the Tide a sub-par score for the tournament. Blomberg posted a 73 (+1) in the third round and finished in a tie for 37th at 223 (+7).
Alabama has two top five finishes in its first two outings this fall and will look to continue the success at the Mason Rudolph Championship beginning Sept. 26. Vanderbilt will host the tournament at the Legends Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn.
