TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team returned home to earn a 1-0 victory over Samford Friday night at the UA Soccer Complex. Alabama used a first half goal and clamped down on defense the rest of the way to earn its second straight win at home. After the victory the Crimson Tide improve to (2-2-1) while the Bulldogs drop to (1-5-0) on the season.
"This was a measuring stick for us because we want to be the best in the state," head coach Todd Bramble said. "I thought we took care of business tonight against a team that has won its conference title and consistently made the NCAA tournament recently. We expected to compete with them on an even level and find a way to win and we did that tonight."
Senior midfielder Jessica Deegan recorded her first goal of the 2008 campaign when she struck in the 29th minute. Sophomore midfielder Rosaly Petriello laid a cross to the right foot of Deegan that she buried from 16 yards out just under the crossbar.
"Rosaly (Petriello) made a great play to beat her defender and played a perfect ball right in front of the goal," Deegan said. "We are really glad to earn a victory in front of the alumni the came out tonight."
Junior goalkeeper Kara Gudmens earned her first shutout of the season on the strength of a game-high seven saves. The two squads each tallied 13 shots a piece. Samford goalkeeper Cayley Winters was tagged with the loss after making four saves and allowing the lone goal.
Deegan and sophomore forward Victoria Frederick led the Crimson Tide with four shots each. Four Samford players tied for the team-lead with two shots each.
Alabama has now shutout its last two opponents at home. The Crimson Tide earned a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville State to open its home schedule on Aug. 31.
Alabama will continue its home stand on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. matinee against Wright State. The match will mark the second of a four-match home stand before the Crimson Tide dive into SEC play.
