
Goodwin Named to SEC Women's Golf Community Service Team

Birmingham, Ala. - Alabama junior Laura Goodwin (Birmingham, Ala.) was named to the 2008 SEC Women's Golf Community Service Team as announced by the conference office today.
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. The fourth annual women's golf Community Service Team follows:
Laura Goodwin, Alabama Laura is on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has helped raise donations for Project Angel Tree and volunteered at the annual Halloween Extravaganza. She also volunteers with the American Heart Association and is a two time member of the All-SEC Academic Team.
Stacy Lewis, Arkansas Stacy is on the SEC Community Service Team for a second straight year. She has participated in the Sweat Hogs, which promotes physical activity in area youth in elementary schools. She has also volunteered at the Richardson Center, feeding Thanksgiving dinner to area families, participated in Razorbacks for Christmas, hosting a play date for area kids at Lokomotion Family Fun Center, volunteered to host area youth in a bowling outing and has been a participant in Arkansas Athletes Outreach Champions of Character. She has also been active with the Christmas Clinic at the First Tee, helping area youth get involved with golf and participated in several Girl Scout clinics and at National Girls and Women in Sport Day clinics. She also has tutored at Farmington Elementary School and participated in several bingo outings at area retirement communities.
Margaret Shirley, Auburn Margaret is on the SEC Community Service Team for the third straight year. A second team All-SEC honoree last year, she is a four-year member of the Auburn Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She has participated annually in Halloween Trick or Treat Downtown, Student-Athlete Day, Beat Bama Can Food Drive and Toys for Tots. She is a two-year member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Team. She has also planned and organized trips to the Gulf Coast for the entire Auburn women's golf team to work on several new homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina and has participated for two years in a week-long mission trip to Cartago, Costa Rica, with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, helping with construction of a new church and parking lots. She also planned and facilitated a Vacation Bible School for children in Cartago.
Eleanor Tucker, Florida Eleanor has contributed over 200 hours the past year to Street Light, a program at the Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville. She has served as a mentor to children at the hospital and helped in anyway possible and has helped raise money and spearheaded a baseball tournament and home run derby that contributed all earnings to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. She is also an active participant in Habitat for Humanity and has also served as a mentor and tutor to kids at several schools through the Gainesville area.
Carolina Andrade, Georgia Carolina has visited patients at St. Mary's Hospital. She has assisted with the Georgia Junior Golf Association's Clinic for junior girls and also volunteered to assist with free golf clinics at Athens Country Club, Georgia Club and Reynolds Plantation. Carolina has been a volunteer for Relay for Life and a member of the Relay Rockstars team. She has assisted with UGA Golf's clinic for children with special needs.
Beth Felts, Kentucky Beth has performed many hours of service in the Lexington area throughout her career. She has spent the majority of her time as a mentor and tutor for Johnson Elementary School. Additionally, she has participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, worked as a volunteer at the UK Children's Hospital and participated with individuals in the Special Olympics Bowling tournament. Additionally she has served at the Special Olympics Golf Camp. During the holidays she also has participated as a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army
Alexis Rather, LSU Alexis is a representative for women's golf on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. This year, Alexis pitched in with helping build Polk Elementary a new playground. She was one of the student-athletes to team up with Shaquille O'Neal and spend the day creating the kids a new and safe environment to play in. She also was a volunteer at LSU University College's Family Association Weekend Meet and Greet this fall. Alexis participated in the First Tee event at Gillis Long Center in Carville, La. The First Tee of Carville is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing golfing opportunities and life-skills education to the at-risk youth who are enrolled in the Job Challenge, Youth Challenge, and Job Corps program at the Gillis W. Long Center. She also visited the children at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital in town, where she went around to visit each patient's room on the pediatric floor to brighten their day. She also spearheaded the Women's Golf station for the Halloween BOOzar, where a Halloween decorated miniature putting green was set up. She also interacted with the kids that came through, handed out candy, and signed autographs. She took part in the Christmas Toy Drive, where women's golf adopted an underprivileged little girl for Christmas. The team raised money and made presents possible at Christmas time to the child and her family.
Katherine Jones, Ole Miss Katherine is president of Ole Miss' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is Ole Miss' representative to the SEC SAAC. She has spearheaded Ole Miss' participation in the SECs "Together We Can" canned food drive and has participated in "Reading with the Rebels", "Jeopardy Night" at retirement centers, National Student-Athlete Day, Career Day, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Locks of Love.
Jillian Jones, Mississippi State Jillian is an active member of the student M-Club organization for student athletes. She has helped with the Halloween Carnival held for children in the Starkville area and has worked with the Bully Book Blitz program in which she read to children at Starkville schools and attended the pep rally. She has also spent time with trash pick up and painting on campus. Jillian worked the Thanksgiving food drive on campus, collecting, sorting and delivering canned food to those in need.
Whitney Simons, South Carolina Whitney has volunteered with the CIS Golf Tournament, Homeworks Home Repair, Ballentine Elementary "Sunrise Storytime" and Ronald McDonald World Children's Day. She has also helped collect for Toys for Tots in the Carolina vs. Clemson toy drive, been a Big Brothers/Big Sisters Mentor, helped with the Harvest Hope Can Food Drive and been a volunteer for the National Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk. She has also spent time with children at Children's Hospital, Midlands Golfing for God, Children's CHANCE Dinner, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Boo at the Zoo.
Nicole Smith, Tennessee Nicole has been active in the University of Tennessee Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, service as Vice-President this year. She has volunteered time at Camp Rainbow, interacting with children, Habitat for Humanity, tutored at Karns Middle School and Sarah Moore Green Elementary School. She has also participated in a reading program with children and has visited local hospitals.
Liebelei Lawrence, Vanderbilt Liebelei has worked with the Athletes Against Assault group (including projects such as Take Back the Night, banner for the Women's Shelter, These Hands Don't Hurt, and the Clothesline project). She is an active member of the Vanderbilt Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which also helps organize the Kids Zone in the Fall activity, a Holiday Party for students from Ross Elementary, and a Field Day for kids in the spring.
