TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Coming off a record setting performance, Alabama junior Kathleen Ekey was named the Golfweek and SEC Player of the Week. Ekey guided Alabama to its second tournament victory of the spring as the Tide took home top honors at its Crimson Tide Classic this past weekend.
"I am very pleased and proud of Kathleen being named player of the week," head coach Mic Potter said. "In my 26 years of coaching, that is the most outstanding performance that I have been a part of. That was a tremendous accomplishment and it was incredible to watch."
Ekey captured medalist honors at the Crimson Tide Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama at the Ol' Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Crimson Tide won the team title as well, against a field that included four SEC teams. The win was her first of the season.
The Wadsworth, Ohio, native, had a 54-hole score of 203, 13 shots under par. Her first round score of 72 was two shots off the pace, but she recaptured the lead with a second-round score of 66. Her final round score of 65 was tied for the best round of the tournament and with second place finisher, Dori Carter of Ole Miss.
Her final score was her best tournament at Alabama by 11 strokes and her final two round scores were Alabama single round score records. She also tied the women's course record in the win. She scored birdies on 19 of 54 holes during the tournament.
For the season, Ekey has a team-best 72.59 stroke average through nine events, which is second in the SEC. She is currently ranked 12th in the nation by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Alabama will next play in the SEC Championships on April 18-20 at the Tennessee National Golf Course in Louden, Tenn.
