TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama bench scored 52 points to lead the Crimson Tide over Alabama State 75-47 Tuesday night at Coleman Coliseum. With the win, Alabama improves to 3-1 on the season, while the Lady Hornets drop to 1-3 overall. The 28-point win was the largest for the Tide since it beat Washington State 66-37 on Nov. 24, 2007 and the first time Alabama scored at least 75 points in a game since Dec. 30, 2006 against North Dakota State.
"It really puts a smile on my face to have a bench play such as ours did tonight," said head coach Wendell Hudson. "As a team, we are making progress and playing a lot better. We're learning how to play with pressure and learning how to sustain that pressure."
Leading the Tide on offense was sophomore Tierney Jenkins, who rattled off a game-high 12 points. Freshman Carmen McCoy topped Alabama in rebounds with six while adding four blocks. Junior Dedrea Magee handed out five of the Tide's 12 assists.
Less than one minute into the game senior Camilla Blands knocked down her first three of the year to put the Tide on the board first. Alabama State countered and tied the score at 5-5 after a three from sophomore Kimberly Davis. On the next possession, the Lady Hornets took their first lead of the contest off a jumper from junior Briana Thomas. After a quick tie at 7-7, Alabama State held on to the lead until the 11:25 mark when sophomore Alyson Butler nailed a jumper putting the Tide up 16-14. Alabama continued to distance itself from the Lady Hornets and finished the half on a 12-0 run to go to the locker room up 35-22.
Alabama State junior Jamie Chambers put up the first points of the second half off a layup at 18:16. The Tide's first points of the period came at 16:23 when sophomore Daleisha Carn hit a jumper from Magee putting Alabama up 37-25. The Tide exploded minutes later with a 25-5 run to put the game out of reach for the Lady Hornets.
Once again, Alabama dominated the boards outrebounding Alabama State 51-38. The Tide scored 28 points in the paint to the Lady Hornets 16 and capitalized on turnovers scoring 26 points to Alabama State's seven.
Next up, Alabama heads west to take part in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. The Tide will face No. 8 Louisville in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 28. The Tide will then matchup with either Nevada or Northern Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 29.
