LEXINGTON, Ky. ?? For the second time in as many outings in the 2007 fall season, the Crimson Tide women's golf team has gotten off to a fast start. The Tide leads the UK Wildcat Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky., after the first round of play. Alabama fired a 4-over 292 to lead second-place Florida by three strokes.
Ironically, the Tide's best round came from a player whose score did not count toward the team's round. Courtney Harter, a true freshman competing as an individual at the event, fired a 5-under 67 and holds the individual lead after 18 holes. That score tied for the second-best single-round tally in school history, one shot off the program record set by Sarah Johnston in 2000. Harter holds a two-shot edge over Stacy Lewis from Arkansas.
Three other UA players on the roster are in the top 10. Another true freshman, Camilla Lennarth, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for fifth place. Senior Sarah Sturm fired an even-par 72 and is tied for seventh. Kathleen Ekey carded a 1-over 73 and stands in a three-way tie for 10th place.
Helena Blomberg is also in the top 25, standing in a tie for 22nd place following her 4-over 76 on day one. Laura Goodwin posted an 83 on the afternoon.
Arkansas is in third place in the team standings with a 298, followed by Central Florida in fourth place. Kentucky and South Florida are tied for fifth in the team standings.
Second-round action will begin on Sunday from the University Club of Kentucky. Live stats can be found at www.golfstat.com
