TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama soccer team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Alabama State Wednesday evening at the UA Soccer Complex.
"I have an incredible amount of respect for Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith," Crimson Tide head coach Don Staley said. "They came in here with only nine players and he could have very easily called and canceled this game. Their players played hard for the entire game and my hats off to them for the effort they put forth tonight when it would have been real easy to give up."
Alabama (5-2) was able to play a very young squad with most of the Tide's regular starters getting a night off. It was the first start of the season for all 11 Tide players tonight.
Freshmen Maggie Bailey, Molly Wittig and Callie O'Steen all saw their first career action. Sophomores Karen Lansden and Kelsey King both played for the first time this season. Freshmen Elizabeth Davis and Hailey Hull and sophomore Ashley Scheidt all played in their second game of the season.
Freshman Carly Mygrants recorded a hat trick with goals in the 8th minute, 32nd minute and 56th minute. Mygrants now leads the Tide with four goals on the season. Freshman Victoria Frederick collected her first career goals with two tonight, one in the 37th minute and another in the 39th minute.
Alex Butera picked up five points in the game with a goal in the 31st minute and three assist, all in the first half. Butera assisted two of Mygrants' goals and also assisted Callie Pike's first goal of the season in the 19th minute.
Elizabeth Davis scored her first career goal in the 20th minute and Mygrants was credited for the assist. Molly Wittig picked up her first career points assisting Butera's goal in the 31st minute.
Kelly King scored her first collegiate goal off a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
Sophomore Karen Lansden picked up the win in the nets for the Tide. She has not played since the 2005 season after suffering a broken hand last season. She did not face a shot from the Hornets in the game
"We got a chance to put some of our younger players on the field tonight and see what they could do, we are going to be depending on this players very soon and the more experience they gain in game situations will be beneficial in the long run for the team," Staley added.
The Tide will return to action Friday night against Southern Miss at the UA Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
