Soccer Defeats Southern Miss 3-0 Friday Evening

TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama soccer team improved to 6-2 with a win over visiting Southern Miss Friday evening at the UA Soccer Complex.
"I was pleased with the way we played tonight for a lot of different reasons," head coach Don Staley said. "We played sound soccer tonight, the atmosphere was electric and exciting with the pep band, cheerleaders and fans on hand. We were able to play with skill, speed and teamwork tonight, which made for a great game."
Alabama played sound and technical soccer tonight, controlling most of the game with short crisp passes until the right scoring opportunity presented itself.
The Tide was able to score the first goal in the 38th minute. Freshman Kelly King played the ball into Kailey Corken who was able to tap the ball inside the near post from about 15 yards out, giving the Tide a 1-0 lead.
Alabama struck again in the 64th minute, this time Corken played the ball in to the box from the right wing where senior captain Jordan O'Banion was able to head the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Crimson Tide scored the final goal of the evening in the 76th minute. For the third time this week sophomore Alex Butera assisted freshman Carly Mygrants on a goal. The two also connected twice against Alabama State on Wednesday. Butera played the ball into the box and Mygrants was able to one touch the ball for her fifth goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Justine Bernier improved to 5-2 on the season and picked up her third shutout of the year. She had seven saves in the game against the Golden Eagles.
Staley also praised the play of freshman Grace Lawson, Jamie Zimmerman, Kelly King and Susie Beard.
"We had a lot of good individual performances tonight, all of which does not show up in the box score," Staley added.
With six wins already on the season Alabama has surpassed last years total of five wins.
The Tide will continue their seven game homestand on Sunday afternoon against Mississippi Valley State, kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game willbe the final tune up before theTide opens SEC play next weekend agaisnt Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
