CHARLESTON, S.C. ?? After a good start yesterday at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., the University of Alabama women's golf team fell back a bit in round two, but remains in the top five in the team standings following 36 holes of play at the Yeamans Hall Golf Course.
The Tide, playing in its first tournament of the 2007-08 season, came out hot on Sunday, carding a 286, one shot behind the team record that UA set at last year's Cougar Classic. On Monday, Alabama fired a 296 and stand in fourth place at the 20-team event.
Tennessee claimed the lead after a 288 in the second round and holds a three shot advantage over second-place Notre Dame. Texas is in third place, three shots ahead of Alabama, while LSU and North Carolina State are tied for fifth with identical two-round scores of 585.
True freshman Camilla Lenarth has the team's lowest 36-hole score following her 1-under 71 in the second round. Lennarth, a native of Sweden, fired four birdies and three bogeys to go with 11 pars in her round. It was her first round under par as a collegiate performer following an even-par round in the initial 18 holes of play. She is tied for seventh place in the individual standings.
Kathleen Ekey, who shot 3-under in round one, carded a 77 in the second round and has a 146 total after 36 holes. Ekey is competing in her first tournament with the Tide after transferring from Furman earlier this summer. She joins Lennarth in the top 25, standing in a tie for 23rd place after two rounds of competition.
Helena Blomberg shot a 4-over 76 on Monday to stand in a tie for 32nd place, joined by senior Sarah Sturm, who posted a 75 in the second round. Sophomore Rhea Nair carded a 76 in round two, knocking off one stroke from yesterday, to climb to a tie for 57th place individually.
Notre Dame's So-Hyun Park leads teammate Lisa Maunu and Tennessee's Marci Turner by a stroke in the individual race.
The third and final round of the Cougar Classic begins at 9:00 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday with a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found on the internet at www.golfstat.com.
