DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ?? The University of Alabama women’s golf team got off to a better start in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Championship but was unable to maintain its momentum, as the Tide shot 319 on the day to remain in 23rd place at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
“The wind was blowing 30-40 miles an hour again today and it really affected us,” Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. “We have not adjusted to that very well, but we have two more days to try to put it back together.”
The Tide had moved up through the first nine holes of competition, but staggered at the finish to drop back in the pack. Alabama fired a 314 in round one and came into the second day in the same place that it ended.
For the second straight day, a true freshman carded the Tide’s lowest round. Today it was Helena Blomberg, a native of Sweden, who shot a 6-over 78, the best score of the day for the team. She posted a birdie on the 14th hole to go with three bogeys and two double bogeys.
Jenny Suh, Alabama’s senior All-American, fired a 7-over 79 with one birdie in the round. Junior Sarah Sturm carded an 80, while Laura Goodwin posted an 82. Rhea Nair, who had UA’s best round on day one, shot an 83 in round two.
Duke made a strong move towards its third consecutive Championship, firing a 287 to move into first place in the team standings. UCLA is in second, Stanford and Purdue are tied for third and Louisville rounds out the top five.
Christel Boeljon of Purdue is in the lead in the individual competition, with a two-stroke lead over Amanda Blumenhurst of Duke, Tiffany Joh of UCLA, Catherine Matranga of TCU and Stacy Lewis from Arkansas.
Tee times for the third of four scheduled rounds at the event is set to begin at 8 a.m. (EDT).
