TUSCALOOSA ?? In front of the espn2 cameras the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles beat California 3-1 in the third game of the NCAA Softball Championships Tuscaloosa Regional.
“It is another great win for our program,” TTU head coach Tory Acheson said. “I am really proud of these kids. For us to play on the big stage with national TV coming was something we don’t get to do on an everyday basis. We handled it with great character and it says a lot about these kids to be able to step up on the big stage and handle the pressure of it.”
Tech jumped on top very early when its first two batters scored. Beth Boden, the first batter up for Tech, drew a walk and was followed by Katie Speiser’s home run shot. It was Tech’s 80th home run of the season, extending its school record.
Cal answered with a homerun of its own when Julie Meyer put one out of the park as the first batter of the third inning. The Eagles answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the final score. Cal fell into the loser’s bracket despite scattering eight hits over the course of the game.
Tennessee Tech’s Bynum picked up the win, going to 34-10 on the season. Cal’s Lauren Frankiewicz tallied the loss, falling to 18-16.
Next up, Alabama plays Florida State starting at 1:30 p.m. in the first elimination game of the regional. Tennessee Tech returns to action Sunday at 1:30 p.m. while Cal will play the winner of the UA-FSU game starting at 4 p.m.
