12/6/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama football team placed three freshman on the 2007 Southeastern Conference Coaches’ All-Freshman Team, the SEC Office announced Thursday afternoon. The Crimson Tide was represented by running back Terry Grant, linebacker Rolando McClain and cornerback Kareem Jackson.
Grant was honored after setting Alabama rookie records for rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. In 11 games, Grant had 180 carries for 891 yards and eight touchdowns. He is looking to become the first freshman to lead the Tide in rushing since Gene Jelks (93 carries, 588 yards) in 1985. Grant was named SEC Freshman of Week three consecutive weeks in September after his performances against Western Carolina (18-134-3), Vanderbilt (24-173-2) and Arkansas (20-96-0).
McClain was the only unanimous selection on the defensive unit. In 12 games this season, McClain was the Tide’s fourth-leading tackler with 70 stops. He added 4.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one sack, one interception and one quarterback pressure. His best game of the season came in the regular-season finale where he had 15 tackles and one interception at Auburn. He also had 11 tackles against Georgia.
Jackson was the Tide’s fifth-leading tackler (61) in 2007. Jackson also added three interceptions (81 yards) during his rookie season. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Week following his performance against Tennessee on Oct. 20. Against the Vols, he had six tackles and two interceptions. He added six tackles and blocked a field goal attempt in the game against LSU (Nov. 3).
