Birmingham, Ala. ?? The Alabama women's basketball team opened its road slate with a 48-46 loss to Samford in the grand opening of the Pete Hanna Center Tuesday night. Three Tide players tallied double-digits in points with sophomore Dedrea Magee leading the way with 13. After the day, Alabama moves to 0-2 on the season while Samford improves to 1-1.
Down 12 with six minutes to go into the game, the Tide were able to claw all the way back and pull within two after Magee drilled a clutch three with 40 seconds left on the clock. The Tide caused a Bulldog turnover with six seconds left, but were unable to convert as the Bulldogs earned the victory.
Magee led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting. The sophomore added four rebounds and was 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. For the second consecutive game, freshman Daleisha Carn tallied double-digit points. The newcomer recorded 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Fellow freshman Caitlin Hollifield nearly tallied a double-double. Hollifield recorded 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting and grabbed nine boards. Freshman Tierney Jenkins tallied eight points and seven boards in her second collegiate outing.
Alabama played stingy defense once again in the first half as Samford was only able to muster 19 points and six field goals.
UA held SU to only a 34 percent (18-for-53) shooting clip for the game and an 18 percent (4-for-22) mark from beyond the arc. Alabama shot 44 percent (17-for-39) from the floor but only connected on 18 percent of its three-point tries.
The Bulldogs heated up early in the second frame though as they raced out to a 10 point lead with 12:38 to go. Alabama was then able to chip away with key stops down the stretch to get the chance to tie or take the lead on the final possession.
Three Bulldog players recorded double-digits in points. Alex Munday, Taryn Towns and Monica Maxwell all recorded 10 points apiece to pace Samford. Savannah Hill got the job done on the glass with nine boards to go along with her six points.
Alabama will return home to the friendly confines of Coleman Coliseum to host Arkansas State. Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m.
