TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama women’s basketball team announced its 2006-07 season schedule. The Tide will open the season, its second under head coach Stephany Smith, on Nov. 10 with a home matchup against Samford.
“As always when you play in the Southeastern Conference, you are never going to get an easy schedule,” Smith said. “From the fans’ standpoint, we have a great schedule with four Sunday home games in SEC play and 19 home games on the schedule including the exhibition games.”
Alabama will play the majority of its non-conference schedule on its home floor in Coleman Coliseum. The Tide will play just three non-conference games on the road in addition to a Thanksgiving tournament in San Francisco, Calif.
The three dates on the road in non-conference action include games at Arkansas State, Tulane and Louisiana Tech. St. Mary’s of California will host the Tide’s only regular season tournament outing, which will also include Cal-State Northridge and Missouri.
Alabama will play just three teams outside of the SEC that it faced a year ago, with outings against Southeastern Louisiana, South Dakota State and North Dakota State. The Tide beat Southeastern Louisiana at home a season ago, but dropped road games to South Dakota State and North Dakota State.
Birmingham Southern and Samford are the only two non-conference instate teams on the schedule. The Bulldogs will be the Tide’s season and home opener, while BSC makes the trip to Tuscaloosa on Dec. 18.
The Tide opens SEC play at Tennessee on Jan. 3, with the league home opener against rival Auburn slated for Jan. 7. Other home opponents in the SEC include Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi State.
Alabama will host two preseason games, beginning with an Oct. 31 contest with West Alabama. Delta State travels to Tuscaloosa for the final exhibition game on Nov. 5.
Season tickets for women’s basketball start at $40, but a group or family are able to purchase season tickets for $25 per person. A new option for women’s basketball fans in 2006-07 is the ability to purchase floor and endline seats.
