Suh Named to USA Curtis Cup Team

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Former two-time VSGA junior girls' champion Jenny Suh, 20, of Fairfax, Va., is among an eight-woman amateur golf team selected to represent the United States of America at the 2006 Curtis Cup Match, which will be played July 29-30 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., the USGA has announced.
Suh is the first Virginian to be selected to the squad since 1986 when Charlottesville's Kandi Kessler was named to the team.
The other members of the squad chosen by the USGA Women's Committee are:
Virginia Grimes, 42, of Meridian, Miss.; Jane Park, 19, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; Amanda Blumenherst, 19, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jennie Lee, 19, of Henderson, Nev.; Taylor Leon, 19, of Dallas, Texas; Paige Mackenzie, 23, of Yakima, Wash.; and Amanda McCurdy, 22, of El Dorado, Ark.
The 2006 USA team will be captained by seven-time USGA champion Carol Semple Thompson, 57, of Sewickley, Pa. Thompson, who counts the 1973 U.S. Women's Amateur among her USGA titles, became the first person to compete in 100 USGA championships when she played in the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur.
The Curtis Cup Match, scheduled every other year, consists of 12 singles and six foursomes (alternate shot) matches. The USA team has won the last four Matches, in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004. The USA leads the series, begun in 1932, by a 24-6-3 margin.
Suh earned first-team NGCA All-America and first-team All-SEC honors for 2005-06, her junior year at the University of Alabama. She had top-nine finishes in 10 of the 11 events she played during the season, including a victory at the 2005 ACC/SEC Challenge and runner-up finishes at The Derby and the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. She won the 2005 Southern Conference and the 2005 Lady Gamecock during her sophomore year at Furman, and finished second at the 2005 NCAA East Regional. Also in 2005, Suh was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship and advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.
While at Furman, she earned second-team NCGA All-America honors as a sophomore and was named the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2003-04. She was named to the NGCA All-American first team last month after leading the Tide to its first NCAA Championship appearance in nearly two decades.
Suh, a graduate of Chantilly High School, made Virginia golf history in 2002, becoming the first girl to ever win the boys and girls Virginia Group AAA state golf championship. A repeat winner of the VSGA Junior Girls'
Championship in 2000 and 2001, Suh was a three-time VSGA junior girl of the year honoree (2000-02). She was the only Virginian represented on the 12-member (six boys, six girls) United States Junior Ryder Cup team in 2002.
In her distinguished career, Suh has claimed three Bobby Bowers Memorial tournaments and with her victory at the 2001 event, she became the only girl to claim three consecutive titles since Jenny Chuasiriporn (1991-93) accomplished the feat.
