MIAMI, Fla. ?? After a promising start in the first round of the Papa John’s Collegiate Invitational, the Crimson Tide women’s golf team fell four places to sixth at the 12-team event, Alabama’s first of the spring portion of the 2005-06 season, after today’s second round.
The Tide shot a 308 in today’s action after holding down second place in first-round play with a 301 on Sunday, giving UA a 609 with 18 holes left to play at the event. Alabama is four strokes behind South Florida and Virginia, who are tied at fourth place with 605 strokes apiece.
North Carolina State knocked 27 strokes off its first-round effort and leads team competition with a 597, two strokes better than second-place East Carolina, who owns a 599 after 36 holes of play.
Jenny Suh and Sarah Sturm, former teammates at Furman University, continue to lead the Tide individually. The duo are tied for ninth with 54-hole scores of 150. Suh shot a 76 in today’s action after an opening round 74, while Sturm fired a 74 following her initial 76 in the first 18 holes of play.
Like much of the fall season, the Tide struggled after the efforts of its first two players. After Suh and Sturm in the top 10, no other UA player is currently among the top 25.
Carina Sorensen shot an 80 after a fine round of 74 yesterday and is tied for 30th place on the individual leaderboard. Fellow senior Audrey Gale has a two-round score of 155 and is tied for 34th place.
Freshman Laura Goodwin is also competing for the Tide at the event and stands in a tie for 63rd place after 36 holes of play.
The final round of the Papa John’s Collegiate Invitational is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21.
