TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama women's golf team continues its stretch of competition against some of the best teams in women's collegiate golf this weekend when the Tide makes a trip to instate rival Auburn to compete in the Derby Invitational from Friday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 29. The 17-team event will be played on the Auburn University Course.
The Tide is hoping to regroup while competing against its third difficult field in as many outings. Stocked once again with top-25 teams, the Derby Invitational field includes teams from the SEC, ACC and Big 12 conferences.
"We've faced some really difficult opponents in our last few tournaments, and we will again this weekend," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We have worked hard in practice in the past few weeks and hope that those efforts will pay off in improved performances and lower scores."
All-American Jenny Suh, as expected, has been the Tide's best player throughout the early part of the 2006 fall season. Suh, who set the school record with a 73.44 stroke average last year as a junior, captured the fourth medal of her career in her last outing at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. She owns a 72.0 average so far in her senior campaign, including a pair of top-10 finishes.
Laura Goodwin, a sophomore from Birmingham, has a 76.67 stroke average this year and tallied a top-10 finish of her own earlier this season. Junior Sarah Sturm and a pair of true freshmen, Rhea Nair and Helena Blomberg, round out the Tide's lineup at the Derby Invitational.
Competition was scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, but has been pushed back to 9:30 a.m. due to inclement weather. The Tide tees off with the first group of teams and is slated to play with SEC rivals LSU and Florida on the first day of action.
