TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama softball team will conclude its fall season with the Fall Brawl II on Saturday at the Alabama Softball Complex.
The Crimson Tide will face Wallace Community College-Dothan at 6:30 p.m. in their first game. They will then take on Shelton State at 8:30 p.m. in the final game of the day. Wallace-Dothan and Shelton State will open the day with a game against each other at 4:30 p.m.
Two Alabama players began their career at Wallace-Dothan under head coach Gene Dews. Juniors Mallory Benak and Blair Potter both had successful tenures for the Lady Govs. Benak was a two-time ACCC first team all-conference selection and NFCA second team All-America in 2004. She set the stolen base record at Wallace-Dothan with 54 in her two seasons.
"I am excited to see my old coach," said Benak. "I haven't seen him in awhile. We want to go out this weekend and fix our mistakes. If we can get those right it will make us feel better because we are ending on a good note."
Potter holds the school record for strikeouts. She was a two-time ACCC first team all-conference choice and was named the Alabama Sportswriters Association Player of the Year in 2005.
"It is going to be good to see coach Dews," said Potter. "I am sure he is not going to back down and I know we won't just because we played for him. They will have another strong team."
Alabama posted a 2-0 record in the first Fall Brawl. Chrissy Owens and Blair Potter combined to pitch 13 shutout innings, allowing five hits with no walks and 13 strikeouts.
Kelley Montalvo and Charlotte Morgan led the offense to 15 runs in the two games. Montalvo ended the day 2-for-4 with four runs scored and six RBI while Morgan made her collegiate debut for the Crimson Tide going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
The Crimson Tide has been practicing as a team since Sept. 26 and will continue with individual drills on Oct. 23 after taking a week off for fall break. They will open the spring season on Feb. 9-11 when they travel to San Marcos, Texas for the Texas State Tournament.
